I plan to make my first trip (truck load of Gathering stuff) to
Mt.Vernon tomorrow (Wednesday) mid to late morning. I may stay in
Mt.Vernon or make the 50 mile trip home for the night and return
Thursday for the duration.

Speaking of "root beer", I will secure two cases of "root beer", one
light and one dark, tomorrow to be used for refreshments at the camp
site. I also secured a donation to cover most of the cost of the
price kick for the steaks. I hated to tell Donny no as we are his
favorite group and he wanted to go all out for us. Anyway, the cost
is not an issue, just don't belly ace to me that your steak wasn't
done EXACTLY the way you like it. Eat it, like it, and have a good
time. :-) You will be asked when purchasing your banquet ticket if
you request a steak or just the buffet to give Donny a count to toss
on the grill.

See you soon

I just got off the phone with Donny from the restaurant at the airport. He will
add the drinks for the buffets for free. That is a $2.00 savings. The only
stipulation is that Larry has to bring his guitar. So Larry I hope you don't
forge. ?: )?Also for the people flying in. The 20 cent discount for fuel will
be taken off at the time of purchase. Just mention you are there for the
Gathering.?
Last thing, Scott Wick from Wicks Aircraft will bring orders placed by Thursday
Sep.15, 2016 to the Gathering with him on Friday. So if you want free shipping
just mention it when you order.?

Just one more month till the Gathering at Mt.Vernon. Anyone wanting
a shirt or hat for this years Gathering will need to get the order in
by the cutoff date of August 20, just 10 days from now. I was much
more flexible in the past but my supplier (my next door neighbor) is
easing in to retirement and my options are limited. Also, unlike
past years, I will not be taking orders at the Gathering and mailing
shirts / hats. I will have a few extra of common sizes at the
Gathering but can't guarantee having a hat or shirt your size unless
you pre-order. If you order a hat / shirt and are unable to attend
the Gathering, I will sell your order at the Gathering. Sorry to get
so persnickety in my old age but nine years of tracking / shipping/
etc. orders for hats and shirts outside the Gathering dates has
proven not to be worth my time and effort.

So, if you want a hat or shirt, order (pre-register
at http://www.bouyea.net/KRGathering/ ) by August 20 or send me an
e-mail ( flesner at frontier.com ) with shirt size by August 20.

John, if possible, plan to have all registrations posted on the 20th
and I will use that as a final count. Thanks...

Gathering attendees,

I'm starting to put things together for the 2016 Gathering. The
Drury Inn and Suites will be the lodging for this year. It is
located next to the interstate, opposite side from the Holiday
Inn. Twenty rooms are blocked until September 1. Blocked are 10
rooms with a single King bed and 10 rooms with double Queen beds for
those that wish to double up with a fellow attendee. The discounted
rate for KR Gathering attendees is $94 a night, discounted from their
normal rate of $135 a night. I was a bit shocked at the price
increases since 2013 but it is what it is. There are a number of
other motels in Mt.Vernon if you wish to find a lower rate. Just
google motels , Mt.Vernon, Illinois. Camping on the field is encouraged.

I had my first meeting with the hat and shirt lady (my Neighbor) this
afternoon. We worked on logo so no decision yet on actual hats /
shirts. I'm leaning toward light denim as we had 5 or 6 years ago
(yes, with a pocket) and seemed rather popular. Hats will be $15 and
shirts $25 with whatever is the final choice and I will lower the
price if possible when final decisions are made. I'm asking John
Bouyea, via this post, to open the registration page on the Gathering
web site so you may begin to register provided you trust my judgement
on the hat / shirt issue. If you want to see them first, please wait
to register so that you can register and place your order all at the
same time. That would save much confusion down the road.

Sure, I can do a fiberglassing demo.? I'll bring the stuff required, and do
an hour to 1.5 hour demo (I always go longer than I think I will...can
always find a lot to talk about).? Maybe somebody can video it.

I did a little flight planning last night and it looks like flying out to
KMMV isn't nearly as daunting as I suspected.? It's almost a perfectly
straight shot from M38 with an inconsequential jog that will never get over
8000' or so, but will still come close to some tall stuff and pretty
scenery.? About 14 hours of flying at 145 MPH, burning about 55 gallons,
done in about 14 hours with four fuel stops.? Just a series of smaller
flights, done end-to-end.? I'm looking forward to the adventure.? I may
even add an extra fuel tank by then and do it in fewer stops.

I'm trying to get N891JF back in the air this weekend with new axles,
wheels, brakes, and tires.? Wheel pants will have to be redone but that's
easier than you might think (I'll document it)...

2015-03-10 Thread Oscar Zuniga
As I recall, the time that Mark Langford conducted an "Introduction to
Fiberglassing" workshop at a Gathering, it was well attended. If he's planning
to come to Oregon for the Gathering and is willing to do the demonstration, I
will volunteer to have a throwaway tail section (wood and foam) ready to be
glassed and will provide some generic glass cloth, Aeropoxy, disposable gloves,
mixing cups, peel ply, plastic sheeting, and all the other props needed for him
to put on his dog & pony show. I may even be able to liberate the calibrated
scales from our materials testing lab in order to keep the meticulous Mr.
Langford happy when he gets ready to proportion the resin and hardener. And
even if Mark has other plans, I know Jeff Scott could probably be coaxed into
doing the workshop.

Personally, I'm keen to see how to make those sharp, crisp, hard, thin trailing
edges on control surfaces. I know you cut back the edge of the foam before it
feathers down to nothing and then fill in with micro that hardens to form the
edge, but I've never done it and never seen it demonstrated.

KR> Gathering update?

2014-09-05 Thread kgartrell74
Hi all -

Been lurking and learning from all the emails for some time now. About a
year ago I bought Bob Morrissey's KR2-S project (in boat stage with spars
built). Need to stop procrastinating and get busy on this thing, but a
little unsure.

The mention of a Fiberglass Workshop going on in Chino got me looking at
Mark L.'s website as well as an archive search for some instruction on
attachment of foam to wood surfaces and fiberglass layup. I think I have a
basic idea. I have a buddy who has built 2 Lancair's. He says this is a
different procedure. I want to be certain to get good adhesion between
wood/foam/glass.

Here's the real question:

Is there any videos that I could watch or download to get a better idea of
this process? Am I just too stupid to find them in the archives or on
n56ml.com? Is it possible to tape the Workshops? (Maybe too late).

Thanks for all the info and ideas on this group!

2011-11-23 Thread Larry Flesner

Netters,

A brief update on Gathering funds. Our balance right now stands at
$4865.00, down just a bit from last year. I still have a few checks
coming my way for hats and shirts but have not yet given Chris
Collins a $250 check for airport facility usage. He said that is not
necessary but I feel we owe them something for using their terminal
for three or four days, totally free hangar space for the KR's for
three nights in a new 11,800 sq.foot hangar, setting up the camp site
with trash cans and firewood, providing us with free transportation,
and all the other perks they provide, i.e., two complete bathrooms in
the new hangar with showers, etc., etc., etc. It also helps him
keep the airport board off his back for any additional expenses he
may incur for the Gathering. A real deal, I think, by anyones
standards. That has been the policy for past Gatherings and I hope
to continue it in the future. I will post a complete line item
accounting to the Gathering site when all is complete.

I still have a few shirts left if someone wants one. I have the
following quantity and sizes: 3 each size "large", 1 each size "extra
large", and 2 each size "3XL". Cost is $23 per shirt plus Mailing
cost of approximately $8.00 USA. Out of country can be considerably
more. Exact cost of postage will be determined at time of
mailing. If you are interested in a shirt, e-mail off net
at fles...@frontier.com . First come, first served, till they are
gone. We now have Gathering hats and shirts being proudly worn as
far away as Canada, New Zealand, and Brazil. Make sure you puff your
chest a bit when wearing them out in public. :-)

I flew the KR today (3 flights) for the first time since completing
the annual this past weekend. The new four tube exhaust is AWESOME
Sounds great and the extra power is VERY noticeable. More rpm
on takeoff and climb and in cruise. I can really feel the extra kick
and I appear to be getting and extra 5+ mph on wide open
throttle. The air was cool today, 45F and flying at 2000 msl, but
I've never seen 180mph on the ASI in wide open throttle in level
flight before. The cabin heat, after flying without it for seven
years, is nice too. I sure hated to put it back in the hangar after
the last flight. Keep building all you builders out there. You have
no idea of the fun that awaits you. :-) :-)

Larry,

I regret that was unable to attend this year's gathering due to work and and
other commitments. By the way my foot is much better than it was when you all
seen me at the 2010 gathering. Its still not 100% but I can fly again. I too am
in annual and want to make a few updates.

I would enjoy getting a Large shirt and a hat. Put me on the list.

If you want that exhaust to be well protected, I might suggest Jet hot ceramic
coating. They do the inside and outside. Most places only do the outside of the
pipes. It helps lower heat under the cowl too. I think Steve Bennent and a few
others may have used Jet Hot and they stand behind it with a life time no
questions asked guaranty. Their customer service is an example of what all
companies should aspire to. I think Steve B.'s at Great Plains Aircraft's is
too.

Sorry for the delay in giving an update on the Gathering.  I've been
a bit busy.

Attendance was down a bit over past years at the banquet but a good
time was had by all.  I still have to mail and collect on hats and
shirts that were pre-ordered.  I hope to take care of that in the
next week or so.  I may be contacting some of you expecting hats and
shirts to get a complete mailing address.  I also will have some
extra shirts to sell, mostly in the "large" and "extra large" sizes,
and when that is completed, we should come out within one or two
hundred dollars of our beginning balance from last year.  I will post
the number of shirts for sale and give a complete accounting of the
funds on the Gathering site when completed.  Thanks to all those that
donated in the "pass the hat" at the banquet.

I will also be contacting Chris Collins, the airport manager, to see
what dates are available for next years Gathering.  I hope to
announce that in the next few weeks also.

Thanks for your patients.  Keep those KR's flying and keep making
sawdust on your projects.  My KR should be through it's annual in a
week or two with new light weight four tube stainless steel
exhaust.  New brake pads, tire rotation, and several other items were
on the list this year.  I hope to be back in the air soon.

P.S.  Joe Horton, I still have your trophy and I'll get it mailed to

Fellow netters,

If you haven't been to www.krgathering.org lately, check in soon for
update on hats / shirts, and awards. Make sure you click on both the
awards and shirt picture for more details.

At this point it appears we have volunteers for judging the KR's,
thanks to Bob Glidden and Michael Sylvester. We could use one
additional judge and I'm asking Bob Glidden to "choose" another "volunteer".

Rich Hartwig is doing name tags, and I've got the hats / shirts
covered as well as the awards. I'm working on the banquet with
Donnie Wilkie, the restaurant owner/manager. Chris Collins, the
airport manager, will help cover most of the terminal setup and some
of his crew will help at the registration table. The registration
table, with hat and shirt sales, is one of the most demanding duties
time wise, requiring two eight hour shifts, and I'm sure they would
appreciate someone giving them an occasional break. I'll provide the
P.A for the forums and I've had several volunteers to lead the
discussions. It looks like we're getting our ducks all in a row. It
won't be long now. If you haven't already made plans, start doing so TODAY.

KR> 2005 KR Gathering update

2008-10-12 Thread larry flesner

Netters,

The 2005 KR Gathering is fast approaching and if you haven't already
made plans to attend, you'd best get started on your "pre-flight" !!

The new airport manager at Mt.Vernon says the airport belongs to
the KR crowd for the weekend. Let's plan on making this years
Gathering even bigger and better than last years.

Forums:

I'm cutting down the number of forums this year from 8 to 4. It was
rushed last year and I'd like to give the attendees a bit more time
to look at, touch, and drool over the KR's. The Gathering web page
has been updated with the forum schedule. We'll have one forum
each morning and each afternoon on Friday and Saturday. They
are: Airframe, systems, engines, and W+ registration+ flying
a KR. I'm having 25 registration packets made available for those
builders that are nearing completion. I will be asking several builders/
pilots to help out at the different forums and if you would like to
contribute, e-mail me off net at ( fles...@midwest.net. )

Hotels: The Holiday inn has limited rooms available this year so if
you'd like to stay there, please register asap. There are many other
fine motels available also and that info is available on the Gathering
website ( www.krgathering.org ).

For those of you bringing spouces, the Cedarhurst Craft Fair will be
going on that same weekend and is something they might enjoy
attending. There should be enough for them to do so they can enjoy
the trip to the Gathering as much as you do.

Meals: I'm planning on having meals available at the airport again
this year for Friday lunch and dinner, Saturday lunch, and of
course the Saturday evening banquet will be held in the airport
terminal, the same as last year.

Shirts and hats: Check out the Gathering web page for the shirts and
hats for this years Gathering. If you plan to attend and haven't
pre-registered, please do so ASAP. Hats and shirts are pretty much
on a pre-order basis, similar to last year. I may have a few extra but
please don't count on it. I'm trying to limit the financial exposure in
this area and still make everyone happy. I have the first round of
orders finished and in the box and plan to submit another order soon
so get your request in via the pre-registration forms. If you've already
pre-registered and need to change/update an order, please e-mail
me direct with your request to my e-mail address given above.

This will be my 16th Gathering without a missed year and I'm
looking forward to seeing the many old friends I've made and
hopefully see some new KR's and make new friends that I'll get
to see again next year.

Speaking of next year, we usually change locations every couple
of years so if you'd like to host the Gathering for 2006 or know
someone that does, start making plans now to bring your
"sales pitch" to the Gathering. Next years location will be voted
on at the awards banquet Saturday evening. And speaking of
awards, they are finished and in the box also, just waiting for
someone to fly in to the Gathering and fly home with a throphy.

HOW MANY MORE DAYS, MARK JONES ?

Netters,

I just got an update from Bob Lee and here are some of the numbers
for the Gathering as it stands right now.

73 preregistrations with 32 states and Canada represented. Willie
Wilson is planning on attending from England also.

18 attendies indicated they intend to fly their KR's to the Gathering.
That does not include the several "overly optimistic" builders that
said they would fly in but will not have their projects completed (ML & MJ).

Good weather could make this years Gathering a record setting event!

Don't forget to go to the www.krgathering.org site and print out a flyer
to post at the local airports. The discount price for the Holiday Inn
rooms is good only till the end of this month. If you plan to book the
Holiday Inn, get it done now. Other hotel info is available at the

If you are a KR builder, flyer, or dreamer, Mt.Vernon will be the place
to be in September!

I don't recall seeing that info in the past on the Gathering website. I
recall
a lot of "Netters" posting saying they were flying in at a certian time and
would share a ride from the airport or saying "I'm driving from X and have
room for a passanger, etc. I'll see what we can do. How about it Netters?

When you post something on this subject, PLEASE put your e-mail
address in the body of the message so responders will e-mail you directly
and we don't get a hundred replys saying "I'll meet you at X, or what
time are you leaving?, etc., etc., etc.,.

Below is a "cut and paste" from the Excell fill of those preregistered.
It's a bit difficult to read but if you go through it slowly the info is
there.
It just didn't transfer well from Excell to Eudora.
