Oh no.  Definitely terrible news.  I was just about to send an email that I
could not attend this KR Gathering because of the recent hurricane we went
through.  Too much damage.  I only just got electricity and internet back.
So I will miss it this year.
But I had been looking forward to seeing all my old friends, with Pete
definitely being one of them.
There just are no words.

I do not know how correct the canopy departing report is but from personal
experience I can tell you that is NOT something you want to experience!

I've seen nothing on that anywhere.  Reports keep saying he was in 
contact with the tower and in my research there is no tower at that 
field, just unicom, 122.8.


In further searching and combining info from several sites it would 
appear that Pete crashed on what would be a mid field left downwind 
about 1/2 to 3/4 miles from the airport.  An older Google Earth photos 
shows one or two open fields very close to that location.  They may have 
tall crops at this time but why the lake?


Speculation helps no one so I hope the cause of the crash can be learned 
to make flight safer for those that follow.

he crashed. He was 74 years old.
