Re: KR> IFR
You can't use a metal or composite prop on a VWs for fear of cracking the crankshaft. Doesn't Corvair have a weakness in this area as well? Re: KR> IFR KR2.
I would caution that the AS504x airfoil series was not tested in icing conditions. Simulated bug guts yes but not ice. All the Hoffman and MT props do as well. The Hercules props have a composite leading edge. I flew IFR for many hours with no problems. Also, just because you are in cloud, it doesn't necessarily mean it's raining. So you can fly for hours IFR without damaging an unprotected wooden prop if you would want to. Also, the KR2 flies ok with a good build up of ice on the wings. It didn't seem to make much difference to performance, not sure about stall speeds, but I wasn't near stall speed so... Go for it!!! I there an aluminum or composite prop that could be used in place of a wood prop? I am just now gearing up to build a KR2S and follow these threads with great interest. I have a Corvair engine that I plan to use in this project. Guy Maniscalco + I've not seen or heard of a metal prop for the Corvair. I'm sure you could find a composite prop but I have no knowledge of their wear pattern in rain. Others on the list would be more knowledgeable on that. Personally, I wouldn't even consider flying the KR in hard IFR where anything other than a wood prop is needed. But that's just me... Larry, I am asking this question out of ignorance. I there an aluminum or composite prop that could be used in place of a wood prop? I am just now gearing up to build a KR2S and follow these threads with great interest. I have a Corvair engine that I plan to use in this project. Re: KR> IFR
when the time comes, I'd like a basic wing leveler or a/p. I installed one into my avid and it made XC more tolerable, ez to read charts, and a big safety option if accidentally experiencing marginal visibility. that dividing line between control and uncontrolled can be pretty "hazy" when it creeps up. a press of a button and ur safe again. but I'm a wimp, and plan to have a chute and an a/p most likely, staying VFR although, and not intending to get my IFR rating or fly IFR.
