I don't know if this information helps, but I have to tell ;)
When I connect my beamer to my laptop with a long (5m) vga-cable, the desktop
and beamer resolution is set to 800x600 and I don't get the resolution higher.
When I use a short cable (1.5m) everything works fine (1024x768).
So for now,
Seconded on i386. I don't quite see what the update which caused this
bug was trying to achieve. Perhaps network-manager-kde should be taken
offline until it has the basic things needed (such as an executable) to
be in a form worth testing.

Same here on i386. Downgrading to 1:0.2ubuntu1-0ubuntu1 also fixes the problem.
Before that, if I entered knetworkmanager from command line, the answer was
that it was not installed and suggested to do a sudo apt-get install

In xorg-server 1.3, X has the smarts to auto-load a number of common
modules. Unfortunately, on rare occasions one of these automatically
loaded modules causes problems, or the user wishes to run without it for
whatever reason. Xorg

Bulletproof-X, in which I need to forcibly disable DRI and other modules
that can cause trouble when running in failsafe mode.
