I'm runing Ubuntu 12.04 (beta) and every so often a window pops up saying
System Notification
Software updates are available
And there are a Cancel and OK buttons.
When I click OK, a nautilus window pops up (I'm using Kubuntu, so its
not something I'm used to see).

The weird effect on the dialog's backgorund is because the dialog is
semi transaparent (which according to my kwin settings probably means
its a dialog and not a normal window) and it is disaplayed over a part
of the background that has a sharp brightness change.

I don't see any widget which can show me the virtual desktops. I think
there should be one, so maybe the listing of available widgets is buggy.

perform the April KDE updates from the kubuntu backports archive. When I click
Full Upgrade then Apply Changes the update fails with the following error:

I had mounted an ext4 file system image via /dev/loop0 then unmounted it just
before starting the installation of kubuntu-desktop
I got this error message during the installation:
