However I never saw the Try/Install dialog; the error was the first
thing that appeared on a Kubuntu/KDE background..
(my issues mentioned OEM & I've seen bug reports on #ubuntu-bugs-
announce tha
I copied the error into buffer, but that was prior to Plasma starting,
and it wasn't there when this bug was started.
If I start ubiquity at terminal now I get
"Installed Crashed" window re-open which maybe the same (again may not
be)

Not an expert here, but the problem appears to be the import apt line 58
in SoftwarePropertiesQt.py.
apt.Cache() lacks the packages attribute.
Replacing apt with apt_pkg (as seen in the detect.py package and to
which the apt_cache is passed) should fix the problem.

The fix from Erich Eickmeyer has been uploaded for kubuntu-settings.
However, as this is a non-optimal solution that spawns an xterm window,
I do not consider this completely 'fixed'.
Hopefully a better solution can be found before release.
