Rebooting into the installed system was successful, but there were over
400 upgrades available. I did tell the installer to download updates,
so hopefully it's just because it hadn't gotten to them by the time it
crashed.

It looks like /var/log/partman did get uploaded.
Note /dev/sda was the install USB thumb drive, /dev/sdc was the target
drive (1TB HDD). /dev/sdb is the old failed drive in the PC, and was
intermittently generating plenty of read errors.

crashed when almost done. Progress bar said something like checking
filesystems 90%. It had already removed all unneeded packages (did
minimal install [not from minimal iso]). Problem in that I couldn't get
