Theoretically at least, what you say is true - that kde hooks for
screensavers wont modify it on gnome/xfce/etc.

I cant confirm this (at least for ftp) with kde 3.5.3, kubuntu dapper.
Note that the username and password is case sensitive.
Could there be bad config files or something causing this? I've never
seen this error reported before.

for me the best solution was install kwallet and then change the wallet
password to nothin. Now I don't need to put any password.

Do you have xscreensaver installed, and what happens if you remove it?
I've seen this before, but i've forgotten exactly what the solution is,
hence the guesses. And i cant currently reproduce it here, as this isnt
a fresh install.

this bug.
Whenever I run it through gdb, it doesnt crash. How annoying! Will
keep trying to get it to reproduce.
Interestingly though, the last time when it crashed, I'd just restarted

kmix.
