I am only getting around 30Mbits/sec according to "iperf" (wires is fine
at ~950Mbits/sec) and see errors like this constantly when I am trying
to make changes to diagnose my poor WiFi performance.

Apols for quick second post.
At login, the progress bar is filled within around 4-6 seconds, the
desktop does not appear until around 24 seconds later.
The "empty session" trick from #81 has no effect, it stil take 30-32
seconds in total to get to the desktop.

I'll concur with this. Whether or not the problem is in transcode or
ffmpeg is a good question; but wherever it is, it renders k3b
inoperative.
Attached is my log after creating ~/.ffmpeg/medium.ffpreset. I think
this happens on the second pass.
