Problem still exists in Kubuntu 23.10. When the password is expired,
the first login attempt always fails, whether or not the password is
correct. The second attempt causes the screen to freeze; moving the
mouse moves the cursor, but nothing else can be done.

Some additional info. I finally managed to install Ubuntu by setting the
display scale in GNOME to 100%. It's a HiDPI screen and it defaults to
200% before installing.

Ok, disabling all desktop effects seems to alleviate this issue mostly.
However I discovered that resizing lxterm always results in the same
crash. Here is lspci if that is helpful.

I'd really like to purge my systems of this failsafe-x nonsense. Is
there documentation some where that explain how to disable the
ironically named program? When I was bit by this bug, I didn't have
access to another computer to search for a solution. I didn't have a
console to read the logs.

I think I have a workaround. I tried
sudo ispellconfig
and set the default language to English. Then restarted Kontact. It
seems to be fine now. Will keep checking, but this is a simple work
around.

I got it working, but I can't explain my fix.
Originally, my sound system was set (in Kcontrol) to ALSA, and KDE
system sounds, mplayer, and amaroK were all sharing the sound card.
Trying to test the configured Kopete sounds from within Kopete (under
Settings - Configure Notifications...)

Kaffeine 0.8.6 in Hardy Beta with updates from April 2008 still crashes
with the dvdcss codecs installed. Is there something else that I need
to install to play DVD's? Vlc plays the same DVD without crashing and
the Hardy release notes point out that Kaffeine now should work.
