I do not quite understand. Both packages always have their upstart config in /etc/init, which one gets started is dependent on /etc/X11/default-display-manager which contains the correct information after the steps you described (at least on 12.10 it does). Please clarify. ** Changed in:

Right. What *actually* happens is that upstart starts both services, then both services evaluate the content of /etc/X11/default-display-manager and iff the file contains the path of the binaries respectively started by the two upstart configs that particular dm continues with starting while the
