[Bug 2063143] Re: Frequent boot to black display

2024-04-24 Thread theofficialgman
I am hitting this on i915 as well with the same 50-75% frequency.

I think this need to be upgraded to critical status (at least for non
GDM login managers where no mitigation exists) and potentially release
blocker depending on how widespread this issue is.

Devices I have confirmed affected by this:
AMD Framework 13
HP Spectre X360

[Bug 2063143] Re: Frequent boot to black display

2024-04-24 Thread theofficialgman
AMD kernel developer wants to classify this is as both SDDM bug and
plymouth bug https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3341.
amdgpu kernel driver is not ready by the time that sddm and plymouth are
started in some cases (race condition). Marking this as a sddm and
plymouth bug (in addition to linux) because of this.

To me it seems that at least a systemd service should be handling
blocking starting GUI userspace services until the kernel drivers are
actually loaded but that is just my thought. I guess the AMD developer
sees this the same way you do Daniel.

[Bug 2063353] [NEW] [SRU] plasma-discover backends race condition cause GUI not to load

2024-04-24 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

It has been found that under many circumstances, plasma-discover will
not load if more than one backend is present. This was first discovered
in plasma-discover 6.0 but the same code seems to be also present in
plasma-discover 5.27.11. Bug fix is found at
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481993. For instance, if plasma-
discover is loaded with just the packagekit backend, it will load. If it
is loaded with just the snap backend, it will load. If it is loaded with
both, the GUI will not load.

[Test Case]

From the terminal:

* $ plasma-discover --backends packagekit-backend
* (will load normally)
* $ plasma-discover --backends snap-backend
* (will load normally)
* $ plasma-discover --backends packagekit-backend,snap-backend
* (will fail)

[What could go wrong]

It's possible that, though tested, the fix in the aforementioned bug
will not work as it would be a backport from plasma-discover 6.0.
However, this seems unlikely as it's highly tested at this point.

[Bug 2063143] Re: Frequent boot to black display

2024-04-24 Thread theofficialgman
Going to change this back to linux as the plymouth failing to display
indicates an issues with KMS (plymouth uses KMS to display graphics on
earlyboot which is what is happening here). The bootlogo from plymouth
always shows (even for a very brief time) when SDDM starts and when it
boots to a black screen the bootlog NEVER shows from plymouth. Using
your reasoning of the race condition I should see the bootlogo at least
sometimes in the boot to black screen but this has never happened (I
have booted dozens of times to black screen and have always never seen
the bootlogo).

I do not think this has anything to do with sddm. If KMS is not working
then of course everything else that relies on it later in the bootstack
will also fail.

The Ubuntu default drivers are in use.

the apl model with empty checkpoint condition that crashes amarok

amarok allows me to generate an incomplete model of APL using an
incomplete "checkpoint" constraint.

to reproduce start with for example this APL model :
pascal@minipc:~$ cat Musique/classiques3.xml

then just
add a "checkpoint" constraint to the constrainttree (see screenshot)
but do not select anything as checkpoint parameters,
just adjust strictness of checkpoint to exact
click OK

the new model is saved

when editing this model you see the 2 constraints are there as in the
screenshot but when exporting this model to a file the "checkpoint"
constraint is absent !

now try to execute this model ==> amarok crashes

running in debug mode gives this upon executing this incomplete model :

pascal@minipc:~$ amarok: [APG::ConstraintSolver] New ConstraintSolver with
serial number 967666005

[Bug 2063143] Re: Frequent boot to black display

2024-04-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Plymouth seems to be running, but also terminating within a couple of
seconds. Since it's designed to not display anything if it thinks it
won't run for very long then I think failing to see a Plymouth boot logo
is OK in this case. You might like to try the workaround for bug 1869655
which is to add kernel parameter:

  plymouth.use-simpledrm

I don't know much about sddm, Plasma or KDE, but there's a clear
difference in the logs. When the screen remains black you're also
missing the sddm log message:

  Display server started.

So it looks like an sddm bug sometimes failing to launch X.

Have you installed a graphics driver manually, or are you using the
Ubuntu default drivers?

** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => sddm (Ubuntu)

[Bug 2063143] [NEW] Frequent boot to black display

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Kernel: 6.8.0-31-generic #31-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat Apr 20 00:40:06 UTC
2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This issue started about 2-3 weeks ago I believe around the time that
Ubuntu updated Noble to linux kernel 6.8 and linux firmware packages.
This issue may not be a kernel regression but instead a wayland
regression but I am not certain and looking for help.

The issue is that on boot the (internal laptop and external displays if
connected) are black but backlight is lit. I am able to boot into
recovery mode without issue since the graphics drivers are not loaded in
that case (only amd framebuffer driver and userspace mesa llvmpipe).
Cold boot from OFF seems to be the most common case for this issue and
it happens about 50-75% of the time from there. I have to force power
the device off and try again in this case. I don't know how to get
proper bootlogs from the previous boot when this is the case since
/var/log only seems to contain logs from the current boot.

[Bug 2063291] Re: [SRU] Correctly map boot entry to OEM setup

2024-04-23 Thread Simon Quigley
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

Historically with Ubiquity-based live ISOs, a boot entry exists specific
for OEM configuration. This has become an expectation from an end-user
perspective, for installs dedicated to that purpose.

OEM mode is a feature that is now only present in Calamares-based ISOs,
with Ubuntu Desktop Installer-based ISOs having progress tracked in bug
2048473. Out of the three Calamares-based ISOs (Ubuntu Unity, Kubuntu,
and Lubuntu), only two of those (Kubuntu and Lubuntu) have dedicated
installer prompts to boot right into the installer, where Ubuntu Unity
simply has a desktop icon on first boot, which is the same as Lubuntu's
functionality from 18.10 to 23.10 in this respect.

Kubuntu has an OEM boot entry enabled, but the installer prompt does
nothing with the additional kernel parameter provided (oem-
config/enable=true). Lubuntu does not have an OEM boot entry enabled
(which will require a debian-cd merge proposal), and also does not have
this logic in the installer prompt. Both installer prompts need simple
  support.

  [ Test Plan ]

   1. Boot a Noble daily ISO or 24.04.1, if already released, for Lubuntu and
Kubuntu.
   2. Select the following boot entry: "OEM install (for manufacturers)"
   3. After system boot, Calamares in OEM mode is shown.

[ Where problems could occur ]

When updating Calamares itself in a future update, care must be taken to
ensure OEM mode continues to work as designed. An underlying regression
in Calamares has the potential to break the functionality of this
  update.

Additionally, if debian-cd changes in a non-backwards-compatible way for
- Noble, this could also break changes.
+ Noble, this could also break the functionality of this update.

  [ Other Info ]

Acceptance of these updates into -proposed must be done after the linked
  debian-cd MP is merged.

This is a release blocker for 24.04.1, not for 24.04 final.

[Bug 2063289] [NEW] Merge installer prompts for Calamares flavors

2024-04-23 Thread Simon Quigley
Public bug reported:

lubuntu-installer-prompt was written first as a simple prototype for a
"Try or Install" screen when booting the live Lubuntu ISO. This was
forked for Kubuntu, and two separate source packages have been
maintained with some code duplication.

[Bug 2062962] Re: Kubuntu 24.04 - SDDM fails to start Plasma session

2024-04-20 Thread Kyrylo Bohdanenko
It seems this got solved for me by editing the ~/.pam_environment file.
Previously I had this:

export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3

Perhaps something for libreoffice... Commenting out that line allows
SDDM to start plasma.

[Bug 2062962] [NEW] Kubuntu 24.04 - SDDM fails to start Plasma session

2024-04-20 Thread Kyrylo Bohdanenko
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to Kubuntu 24.04 SDDM fails to start Plasma Wayland session:
1. I enter the correct credentials
2. The screen goes black for a few seconds
3. The SDDM greeter appears again, asking for login credentials.

However, I can start plasma session manually by running
/usr/bin/startplasma-wayland from a different TTY.

Attaching the output of `journalctl -f` during an attempt to start Plasma from
SDDM.

[Bug 2062945] [NEW] Kubuntu 24.04 (Beta) Installer ISO shows Lubuntu artwork

2024-04-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When doing a fresh install of Kubuntu 24.04 (Beta), and choosing the
"install to disk" option rather than the Live CD option, during the
actual installation of the operating system, the artwork and messaging
that's shown to the user (the commercials) are for Lubuntu rather than
Kubuntu. This is probably an oversight but it should probably be
corrected before 24.04 goes live in a few days. Apologies if this bug
has already been reported.

[Bug 2062075] Re: installer does not detect an installation of DragonflyBSD with UFS

2024-04-19 Thread ԜаӀtеr Ⅼарсһуnѕkі
Ok, so trimming the description down to UFS.

Even then, I'm not sure it's reasonable to expect that installers would
detect it. I mean, AFAIK, UFS support is limited to read only. Which
should be sufficient, but, that may explain why it's poorly supported.

I **thought** there was a ufs-utils package but I must have dreamt it.
There is a kernel module for UFS though.

The HAMMER filesystems were never ported anywhere outside of DFBSD that
I know of.

Tested Mantic for funsies and the behaviour is the same.

Tried Win10/NTFS again and it seemed to work. I installed Win10 updates
but I'd be surprised if that made a difference. Possibly a file system
issue last time I tested. Tried Win11/NTFS too and it found that.

With DragonflyBSD, though, the issue is the same. I'd expect the HAMMER

[Bug 2062428] Re: Kubuntu 24.04 daily builds - Install randomly hangs/fails/crashes on systems with less than ~3GB of RAM

2024-04-19 Thread Eugene San
@wxl
I am not sure if the Kernel change is the sole reason, but I first encountered
the issue when Kernel switched from 6.6 to 6.8.

Maybe it was just a tipping point when memory consumption became too
high for 2GB systems and later for 2.5GB.

Also I am not sure when zram-config was removed from manifest but it for
sure didn't help.

[Bug 2062075] Re: Ubuntu installer does not detect other operating systems

2024-04-19 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Installed Windows 10 Home allowing it to use the entire SSD of my test system.
Booted Kubuntu 24.04 ISO.
Install alongside option appeared, used it.
Installation succeeded.
Upon reboot, I was presented with a GRUB menu, providing both "Ubuntu" and
"Windows Boot Manager" options. Selecting "Ubuntu" boots me into Kubuntu 24.04,
selecting "Windows Boot Manager" boots me into Windows 10.

I cannot reproduce this bug.

[Bug 2062075] Re: Ubuntu installer does not detect other operating systems

2024-04-19 Thread ԜаӀtеr Ⅼарсһуnѕkі
One caveat with Calamares is that while it supposedly tries to unmount
before getting drive information, this doesn’t always work. One reason
why is because the Ubuntu platform auto mounts swaps. That said, I’d try
to check what’s mounted and unmount before starting the installer.

I tested on a 20 GB disk image. The installer shrank the existing
partition to around 9 GB and installed alongside it. There was also the
option to install over the existing installation.

2024-04-18 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Alright, so this is fun. Apparently there's an image full of keyboard
layout labels in Kubuntu's plymouth theme. There also appears to be code
that handles the password prompt, my assumption is that code extracts a
slice of this image to show the keyboard layout to the user. Evidently
it's doing it wrong. So now the question is what changed to break it and
how to make it do it right now.

This bug should be visual-only, there's code in the Calamares
configuration specifically meant to make sure the real keyboard layout
is set correctly. However, the wrong one being displayed even with the
right one in use is definitely very confusing.

Interesting that it doesn't happen with BGRT, I'll have to check that
out. Thank you!

2024-04-18 Thread Ken Sharp
The default settings are to lock the screen after one minute. That's not
even long enough to file a bug report.

** Description changed:

While testing the Kubuntu Noble daily live environment my session
locked, though I never asked it to nor did I get the change to set any
  preferences, and refused to unlock.

Supposedly the default password is empty, but entering an empty password
refuses to get it to unlock. I am forced to reset the VM.
+
+ P.S. I don't know where to assign this yet.

2024-04-18 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

While testing the Kubuntu Noble daily live environment my session
locked, though I never asked it to nor did I get the change to set any
preferences, and refused to unlock.

Supposedly the default password is empty, but entering an empty password
refuses to get it to unlock. I am forced to reset the VM.

[Bug 2062400] [NEW] segfault during install after changing language

2024-04-18 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Immediately upon booting the Kubuntu Noble daily live environment I
attempted to change my language to English (UK), and I was greeted with
an error dialog about Kwin.

The dialog had a process of sending a bug report but it claimed that the
"backtrace is not useful" and would not proceed. I saved it anyway and
am attaching it.

Our signon-ui is too old. Will have to SRu it. Too late for noble. kio-
gdrive is no longer provided by default due to the excessive issues.

[Bug 2062075] [NEW] Ubuntu installer does not detect other operating systems

2024-04-17 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

As part of the QA ISO testing I have hit upon the following issue:

“Select Install Kubuntu XX.XX alongside SYSTEM YY
(SYSTEM YY is the name of the system already installed on disk (Kubuntu 12.04,
Windows 7, ...)”

With DragonflyBSD installed, the installer cannot see it and the option
to install alongside is never shown. Tried with UFS, HAMMER and HAMMER2.

Tried again with Windows 10 and NTFS, and the issue is exactly the same.
