I've just tried with the lastest kvm version available, 33, and now it
works. I'm also using a new kernel, this time kernel version 2.6.22.

Since you have a APIC-capable system you can try with nmi_watchdog.

It was suggested that maybe my BIOS was not configuring vmx correctly. Are
there further BIOS tests I can perform?
