The plan was to talk about the project, which was featured in a Sundial article on 9/28. You told me that you would arrive around 1:30 to 1:45 pm for your 2 pm class. I waited from 1:30 until 3:15 when I had to pick up my son from school. You said on the phone that you were not pleased with our installation. Your concern was that your young cadets would be made uncomfortable and demoralized by this project as they walked by and entered the ROTC building. Colonel, these are tiny plastic toy army figures transformed into non-military entities (such as pink bunnies) that have been placed in hand built earthwork dwellings. They are not the mangled corpses of Iraqi babies that your young cadets will see when they get to Iraq. You also asked if students will be graded on this project, which you referred to as political. The answer is, yes. Among other things, they are graded on the formal concept of how well they achieved transformation of the army figures who students imagined returning to peaceful jobs. You might be interested to know that a recent trend in art education is called Issues Based Art Education. Students are expected to include issues and ideas from culture as part of their art experience. The first chapter in our textbook, Understanding Art, addresses the many functions of art such as Art Stimulates the Intellect and Fires the Emotions,(p.13) Art Reflects the Social and Cultural Context, (p.18) and Art Protests Injustice and Raises Social Consciousness. (p. 19). I presume what you teach is also political. You also told me on the phone that you were considering your options which might include filing a complaint with the administration. You also demanded to know exactly when the installation would be removed. I realized later, as I was standing, waiting for you in the hot sun, that you are not my boss. I do not answer to you. However, I have decided to cc the people who are my bosses. While I may get a reprimand or other consequences, I am hoping that my first amendment rights and tenure will protect me from being sent to Guantanamo.Sincerely,Edie Pistolesi "Be the change you would like to see in the world..." - Gandhi www.sonicbids.com/glassband www.csun.edu/~csunupj [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
