the region “the three Western states have landed their special forces
troops in Cyrinacia and are now setting up their bases and training centres
to reinforce the rebel forces who are resisting pro-Qaddafi forces in

[LAAMN] FWD: Venezuela rejects foreign intervention in Libya

2011-03-02 Thread Angostura1819

People who believe in the non intervention of other countries' affairs should
like Venezuela stand with the people of Libya and at the same time reject all
kind of interventions including from the UNO.

There should be an urgent international massive call by the anti-war movement
to support the proposal made by Venezuela before the UNO such as the creation
of a Goodwill International Commission for Peace through the immediate
promotion of dialog between Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi's government and the
opposition sectors.

Here in Los Angeles the antiwar movement is in silence and away from assuming a
dignified revolutionary stance to the dangerous moment Libya is facing in
getting wrapped into another bellicose war scenario with the consent or amen
of the world who has been bombarded with so many lies about the people's revolt
in Libya. Like Sadam Husseing, Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi is getting
portrayed like a crazy person and demonized in so many ways that even in the
lef, many believe and repeat the same what the corporate media is vociferating.

Bolivarian Circle of Los Angeles Ezequiel Zamora.

Venezuelan Ambassador to the UNO Jorge Valero

Venezuela rejects foreign intervention in Libya

The South American country ratifies its opposition to any kind of military
intervention and proposes talks as a solution for the conflict

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has once again made a call for
understanding in order to achieve peace in Libya. In the General Assembly of
the UNO, Venezuela also ratified its firm rejection to any kind of military
intervention in this country located in northern Africa.

Venezuelan Ambassador to the UNO Jorge Valero criticizes that those seeking for
the use of military force in Libya are not trying to defend human rights, but
to establish a protectorate to seize one of the most important oil and energy
sources in the Middle East.

During his participation in the debate of the General Assembly on Resolution
A/65/L.60, Ambassador Valero stated that any resolution of the UNO should be
aimed at promoting peace and understanding, and not to favor war. The
objective of a resolution is to preserve sovereign unity and territorial
integrity of the Libyan State.

In this Regard, Valero proposed the UNO the creation of a Goodwill
International Commission for Peace through the immediate promotion of dialog
between Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi's government and the opposition sectors.
This will allow to reach understanding and reconciliation of the Libyan people.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez made this proposal on Monday night when
referring to the situation in this African country.

According to Ambassador Valero, the proposal made by Venezuela suggests that
the commission could have representatives of the African Union (AU), the League
of Arab States, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR -
Spanish acronym) and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America
(ALBA - Spanish acronym), among other international organizations.

We reiterate our condemnation of violence, imperialism and interventionism.
Stated Valero. He deplores the double standard used by imperialist countries
regarding human rights and referred to the death of thousands of people as a
result of the military invasions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. The Libyan
people, as the only protagonist of its history, is the only one entitled to
choose its own destiny without foreign interference.

Valero advised that any decision made on the events taking place in Libya must
be based on an objective and credible inquiry, which confirms the veracity of
the facts since any country can be condemned a priori.

I am sending this plea out to more than 50 of my friends because I believe you
will agree we have to do something to stop the plunder of Social Security.

Please consider responding to this urgent request to stop the Senate from
cutting funds from Social Security that would lead to the layoff of the people
who process our social security checks each month. If these employees lose
their jobs, recipients of social security will experience delays in receipt of
their payments and others applying for social security will suffer longer
delays in getting approved.

Thank you

Take Action

Dear Sharon,
Republicans have found an easier way to cut Social Security—just cut funding
for the Social Security Administration (SSA). In the wee hours of the morning
on February 19, all but three House Republicans voted to cut $1.7 billion from
the SSA. The proposed cuts are so severe that the SSA could have to furlough
thousands of workers for 1 month out of the 7 months remaining this budget
year.

The impact of these cuts for retirees, disabled workers and families will be
devastating.

Please attend a noon rally on March 2nd to support restoring funding to the
Social Security Administration. Click here to see if there is a rally near you.
If you can’t attend a rally, please call your Senators.

Here’s what these cuts will do:

Up to 400,000 people will have their applications for retirement, survivors and
Medicare benefits significantly delayed.
Up to 290,000 people will have their applications for disability benefits
significantly delayed. Unbelievably, it already takes nearly 500 days on
average to have a disability claim resolved.
What’s worse is that these cuts are nothing but cutting for cutting’s sake.
;When we say Social Security doesn’t add a penny to the deficit that goes for
the costs the Social Security Administration incurs making sure that workers
get the benefits they earned. The money you contribute to Social Security
every day you work pays not only for your benefits, but for the Social Security
Administration’s work keeping track of your earnings, so that you get the
benefits you earned.

Please attend a noon rally on March 2nd to support restoring funding to the
Social Security Administration. Click here to see if there is a rally near you.
If you can’t attend a rally, please call your Senators.

The Republican agenda is clear. The party wants to cut, privatize, and
otherwise harm Social Security. This month they are trying to defund the SSA.
In April and May they will try to cut Social Security benefits outright.

It’s up to the U.S. Senate to keep the doors to the SSA open for business.
This could be decided over the next two weeks. We need you to call your
Senators today.

Thanks for fighting to strengthen Social Security,

Corporate 'Education Reform': A Moment of National Insanity

By Diane Ravitch
Education Week

http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/Bridging-Differences/

I'm beginning to think we are living in a moment of national
insanity. On the one hand, we hear pious exhortations about
education reform, endlessly uttered by our leaders in high
political office, corporate suites, foundations, and the
media. President Obama says we have to out-educate the rest
of the world to win the future.

Yet the reality on the ground suggests that the corporate
reform movement-embraced by so many of those same leaders,
including the president-will set American education back, by
how many years or decades is anyone's guess. Sometimes I
think we are hurtling back a century or more, to the age of
the Robber Barons and the great corporate trusts.

Consider a few events of the past week:

Subject: [PDLA] Winograd Campaign Kick-Off Speech in Old Town Torrance

Friends, it was a beautiful day, not a hint of rain, bright sunshine for the
Winograd for Congress campaign kick-off in Old Town Torrance yesterday.
From there we drove to the labor rally downtown, where I spoke in
solidarity with public workers under assault everywhere, called for
prosecutions on Wall Street (Not one banker has gone to jail!), and talked
of the importance of providing real opportunities for our youth facing
an economic draft. For those of you who were unable to attend the kick-off,
I have included my campaign speech below.

Peace, Marcy (to sign up, visit www.winogradforcongress.com)

Thank you for joining me at Fox Drug in Torrance, where our friend the
Egyptian pharmacist Ahmed Atallah graciously invited us to kick off our
campaign for Congress in the 36th District. Like the Egyptians clamoring
for democracy, we stand here to make our voices heard in the halls of power.

With the Open Primary just three months away, put on your running shoes
because this is a sprint to June.

Many of you participated in my last campaign, in which we mobilized 41% of
the vote. Our platform was clear – to transition from a war economy to a
Green economy, where no one is held hostage to bomb-building because
opportunities abound in aerospace and engineering to build mass transit,
solar cities, new schools and health clinics.

Though our last race was not long ago, only last June – those who would seek
to privatize and loot America have gained unfortunate traction in the
interim.

Multiple wars are tearing America apart. First, the war on public sector
employees, as we see in Wisconsin, Ohio, New Jersey and other states where
public sector workers are threatened with the loss of bargaining rights in
order to undermine the power of unions to protect our social contract. By
the same token, we witness the war on the middle class, where homeowners
lose their homes to foreclosure; credit-hungry small businesses close up
shop, and nervous software engineers in the South Bay are told to train
their replacements in India. As a teacher, I note the war on our youth, the
young men and women in my classroom who, when asked about their future
plans, tell me, “I want to join the military, so I’ll have a job. What am I
going to do with my life? The military is my best option.” And let us not
forget the war on our veterans who come home in wheelchairs, without arms
and limbs, haunted by nightmares of combat, unable to collect on the
benefits promised. Finally, we hear the barrage of attacks on seniors who
desperately need their Social Security checks and Medicare coverage to make
it through the day. The continual assault on these safety nets spawns
untold lies and fear-mongering about deficits that will cripple our country.

We know the truth – the only thing standing in the way of government for the
common good and no government at all is the call to deregulate and
decimate – all in the name of fiscal responsibility, under the umbrella of
inevitable budget cuts in a shock-doctrine approach that capitalizes on the
sub-prime melt down by using the budget crisis to do what the right-wing in
America has been trying to do ever since the New Deal; Gut our social
programs.

We will not sit still for this any longer; we will demand that our leaders
protect and even enhance the hard-won rights we have fought for, and our
mothers and fathers fought, starved, and died for.
I am running for Congress, again, because now is the time for bold
leadership, for someone to stand

[LAAMN] Is Algeria Qadaffi's Ace in the Hole?: Who Else is Helping the Libyan Leader?

2011-03-02 Thread Romi Elnagar
Who Else is Helping the Libyan Leader?
Is Algeria Qadaffi's Ace in the Hole?
  By ROB PRINCE
  At this moment when it
appears that Muammar Qadaffi’s days in power are numbered, the Libyan
leader has made it clear repeatedly that he will stay and fight. So far
he has. His domestic support is evaporating around him, leaders of the
country’s 140 tribes siding with the rebels, military units siding with
the rebellion in larger and larger numbers, air force pilots and naval
vessels defecting to Malta. Much of his government, other than his sons,
 has abandoned him as well.
  What is left?
Those heavily armed private militias controlled by
his sons? The army of mercenaries from sub-Saharan Africa? Some Mirage
jet fighter planes with, until now, pilots less than willing to bomb
rebel strongholds? All that is true. Yet while the U.S. and Europe work
to isolate Qadaffi,  he is not completely alone and without allies.
Given his ever shrinking domestic base, one has to
wonder how it is that Qadaffi can appear so defiant? It might come from
the fact that he is not entirely isolated and alone. Indeed, the support that
Qadaffi is garnering has stiffened the colonel’s backbone.
Qadaffi has the support of at least one important
regional ally, the Algerian government, which has both militarily and
diplomatically thrown its full (and substantial) weight behind his
effort to retain power. In so doing, it would appear that Algeria, which
has long cooperated with the US and NATO on its North and Sub-Saharan
Africa anti-terrorism policies, is breaking ranks to protect its
regime’s very survival.
Since its independence, Algeria has been controlled
by its military which lives high off the country’s oil profits at the
expense of its own people. Algeria’s leaders fear that if Qadaffi falls,
their hold on power will be that much more fragile. Their support of
Qadaffi is very much designed to save their own skins.
If Mubarak saw the writing on the wall as Ben Ali’s
little castle in Tunisia crumbled, so the Algerian military leadership
understands that if Qadaffi falls, it very likely is next in line, or if
not, not very far down the list. Desperate to cling to power, the
Algerian government is – while offering a few political and economic
concessions – essentially reorganizing the state’s substantial
repressive apparatus to weather the protest storm. But in addition, it
is pulling out all stops to support Qadaffi’s increasingly feeble hold
on power.
Maybe it is the support of its North African oil
producing ally Algeria, that has given Qadaffi that confident appearance
that he can indeed – with a little help from his friends – hold out
longer. An alliance of two of Africa’s most important oil producing
countries is nothing to sneeze at, and could have all kinds of
consequences. Should the alliance between the two tighten, and they
engage  in a common front oil embargo, which some news outlets speculate
could happen, oil prices could jump to as high as $220 a barrel.
Less than a week ago, an Algerian human rights group
based in Germany, Algeria Watch, published a statement alleging that the
Algerian government is providing material aid – in the form of armed
military units – to Muammar Qadaffi to help prop up his shrinking (and
sinking) regime.
  The statement opens thus:

“It is with both sadness and anger that we have
learned that the Algerian government  has sent armed detachments to
Libya to commit crimes against our Libyan brothers and sisters who have
risen up against the bloody and corrupt regime of Muammar Kadhafi. These
armed detachments were first identified in western Libya in the city of
Zaouia where some among them have been arrested. This has been reported
in the media and confirmed by eye witnesses.”

Zaouia is the site of fierce fire fights between the
residents of Zaouia, now a zone liberated from Tripoli’s control and
under the authority of rebel forces on the one hand, and the military
elements still faithful to Qadaffi on the others. There were recent
reports of a 6-8 hour battle in which Qadaffi’s forces, led by one of
his sons tried to recapture the city but were repulsed by the city’s
defenders and pushed back after fierce fighting.
Algeria Watch goes on to accuse the Algerian
government of having provided the air transport planes that have carried
sub-Saharan African mercenaries from Niger, Chad and the Dafur province
of Sudan to Libya to strengthen Qadaffi’s position militarily. It goes
on to add that Algeria had played a similar role in transporting troops
to Somalia to support the U.S. directed government military offensive
against rebellious Somali tribes.
The statement goes on to allege that on the
diplomatic front the Algerian government has been lobbying different
European powers (which are presumably France, Italy, German, Belgium,
Luxembourg and Spain) pressing them to continue to support Qadaffi.

Tehran was filled with anti-riot police forces today

On March 1st, brave and persistent Iranian civilians once again protested in
the main cities of the country. Gatherings and clashes were reported in
Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad, Tehran, and Rasht. Persian2English has recapped
the events that unfolded in Iran today. The support received from people
outside the country is also highlighted.

Today’s civilian protests in Iran were organized by supporters of Mir
Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, the two head figures of the reformist
opposition movement in Iran. The most recent news from opposition websites
indicates that the two men have been captured by the Islamic Republic of
Iran officials and are held in Tehran’s Heshmatiyeh
prisonhttp://persian2english.com/?p=20255.
Their families have not been able to contact them for the past two weeks and
no other sources have information on Mousavi’s and Karroubi’s conditions.
Also, no officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran have confirmed the news
of the arrests.

Last night, Mohammad Marandi, the unofficial propaganda mouthpiece for the
Islamic Republic of Iran told
CNN,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coz4XBvXbbY“Mr. Mousavi and Mr.
Karroubi are seen by the vast majority of people to
have, gone way too far, caused riots, [and] effectively accepted the backing
of the United States, terrorist organizations like the Mujahedin Khalgh,
Monrachists. And this is something in Iran that is just unacceptable.”

*PROTESTS IN TEHRAN*

Based on the videos that surfaced from

the main chants in Tehran were, “Death to the dictator”, “Allah o Akbar”,
and “Ya Hossein Mir Hossein”. Civilians also chanted a couple slogans that
called on the army to join the people. Many cars honked their horns in
support of the people braving to protest while walking in the streets.

Numerous news sites reported on protests outside the University of Tehran
and on Enghelab Square. The amount of anti-riot police forces out on the
streets was unprecedented and, according to
eyewitnesseshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw1vnXpmqls,
many people were forced to show their protest by honking the car horn.

Deutsche Welle http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,6455126,00.htmlpublished
an eyewitness account of a large crowd gathered in Tehran, despite
the use of tear gas on protesters. Unconfirmed reports indicated that the
crowd that has gathered at Enghelab Square was larger than the one for the
February 14th protests.

Kaleme http://www.kaleme.com/1389/12/10/klm-49976/ reported that anti-riot

Enghelab Square. The regime forces used batons, tasers and tear gas to
attack protesters. There are also reports of gun fire around Enghelab
Square. It is not confirmed whether the bullets used were real or plastic.

The gatherings grew larger as night time approached. Protesters who tried to
enter Enghelab Square through side streets were dispersed by regime agents.

Around 6:30pm, anti-riot and plainclothes forces prevented people from
entering Valiasr Square and ENghelab Square. All entrances to these two
squares were blocked.

According to BBC
Persianhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/persian/iran/2011/02/110214_live_iran_25bahman.shtml,
eyewitnesses report the arrest of at least 50 people in Enghelab Square.

[LAAMN] Libya: Dreams of Western Intervention

2011-03-02 Thread Romi Elnagar
Libya: Dreams of Western Intervention

by Susil Gupta,
February 26, 2011

The crisis in Libya is quickly becoming an international
embarrassment. Not, this time, because of Gadhafi’s clowinsh antics, but
because it provides a spectacular opportunity for the world to see just
how much Western power has declined during the last decade.

Despite being the most powerful nation on earth, and having a
military apparatus on a scale greater than the sum of every other
country, the US has patently failed to impose its solutions in Iraq,
Afghanistan and Pakistan. Far from America being able to force the
Ayatollahs into submission, Iran gains strategic ground every day. The
financial crisis has paralyzed the power of Western finance. Western
central bankers have had to go begging to China and the oil rich
countries for loans. The Arab revolt of 2011 has now destroyed the
exclusive grip Anglo-American rule once had in the region.

And now Libya promises to make explicit the powerlessness of the
West. As Laurence Pope, ex-political advisor to the US Central Command
and ex-ambassador to Tripoli told Le Monde in a sobering assessment,
Washington finds itself in a situation where there are only bad options and
others that are worse.

What has been the response in Europe? The European Left and the
liberal bourgeoisie remain very interventionist and are firm believers
in humanitarian bombing. They are clamoring for a muscular Nato
intervention along Balkan lines. An editorial in Left-leaning Guardian
supports the call by liberal Lord Owen that military preparations
should be made and the necessary diplomatic approaches, above all to the
Russians and the Chinese, set in train to secure UN authority for such
action. Should the crisis continue, the Guardian argues,
intervention on the ground would have to be considered. The Egyptian
army has the means, other Arab countries could contribute, and western
forces could help. Yes, and it would all be over by Christmas.

It is obvious that these war enthusiasts have not thought this
through – but then they would not be doing any of the fighting. The
plain fact is that there are no feasible military interventions even if
the major powers could agree on an intervention plan, which is very far
from being the case. Consider the options.

Imposing a no fly zone. This would require extensive air patrols by
foreign air forces. They would have little effect since air power is not
key to Gadhafi’s strategy. It would, however, create an atmosphere of
major war and give Gadhafi a propaganda boost.

Creating a military barrier or cordon sanitaire around
eastern Libya to protect rebel positions.  Likewise this would
crystallize the situation into a two-sided war, which could only play
into Gadhafi’s hands. It is to the advantage of those that want to
topple Gadhafi to avoid a war of entrenchment or fixed positions,
preventing them from permeating every level of society and undermine
further his crumbing power base. In any case such Western intervention
would be impossible to implement. No Western commander is going to
deploy troops at short notice into a theater unknown to his troops but
well-known to an enemy who, in any case, cannot be easily distinguished
from friendly forces. It is a recipe for disaster.

Sending in a peace keeping African Union force to separate the
parties. One way to unite every Libyan behind Gadhafi, given the
reputation of such forces in the past.

Sending in a peace keeping force made up of troops from Arab countries as
The Guardian
recommends. One way to unite every Libyan behind Gadhafi and infect and
inflame the whole of the Middle East with the vicissitudes of a Libyan
civil war.

Bomb. But where? Tripoli? Gadhafi’s hideout?  In addition to the
lack of any meaningful target, Western bombing might give others the
idea of bombing targets that are indeed of great strategic value: oil
wells and pipe lines.

Sanctions. Libya’s massively long borders are totally porous and
populated by peoples and countries keen to do business and who don’t
give a damn about UN Security Council resolutions.  On the contrary,
given the strategic importance of Libyan oil and gas to several European
nations, Libya is the only country in a position to apply effective
sanctions against anyone else. The price of oil has already
shot up to $110.  Watch how the Italians start

More Info We all know the time has come! If not
now, when? March 31,(César Chávez's birthday)
will be a national day of marches, rallies,
non-violent demonstrations, protests and I'll bet
a lot of people call in sick that day. This is a
true grassroots movement and will depend on local
organizing. The hard working men and women of
this country are being attacked by corporate
sponsored Republicans and must stand united.
History is repeating itself. The idea of trickle
down economics was tried back in the 1890's under
the name horse and sparrow theory. It worked
great for the Rockefeller's, Carnegie's and
robber barons (the top 2%) What happened? In 1892
there was a steel workers strike in Homestead PA
that started a string of nationwide protests.
These ACTS OF SOLIDARITY created the modern
working middle class. Today the fight is the same
and MADISON IS THE NEW HOMESTEAD. It is up to us
to fight for the middle class of tomorrow! SOLIDARITY FOREVER!

[LAAMN] divide and deport

Divide and Deport: On Immigration, Thom Hartmann
and Lou Dobbs Have Much in Common
By David Bacon
Working In these Times, Feb 28, 2011
http://www.inthesetimes.com/working/entry/7007/divide_and_deport_on_immigrants_thom_hartmann_and_lou_dobbs_have_much_/

Radio host and author Thom Hartmann has a new
book, Rebooting the American Dream. Hartmann has
a progressive reputation, and his book supports
unions, calls for eliminating tax cuts for the
rich and advocates other sensible ideas. But like
many liberals, when it comes to immigration his
tune changes.

In one chapter, Hartmann says he wants to Put
Lou Dobbs Out to Pasture. But Hartmann, like
Dobbs, criticizes corporate power and then turns
his fire on workers and immigrants. Instead of
taking Lou Dobbs on, Hartmann repeats many of the
stereotypes and falsehoods that gave Dobbs a
reputation as one of the most anti-immigrant
commentators in U.S. media. Hartmann, like Dobbs,
claims to speak for the interests of working
people. And his ideas do reflect the thinking of
a certain section of the U.S. working class. That
makes it important to understand the impact of
his recommendations.

There has always been a conflict in U.S. labor
about immigration. Conservatives historically
sought to restrict unions and jobs to the native
born, to whites and to men, and saw immigrants as
job competitors-the enemy.

This was part of an overall perspective that saw
unions as businesses or insurance programs, in
which workers paid dues and got benefits in
return. Labor's radicals, however, from the IWW
through the CIO to those in many unions today,
see the labor movement as inclusive, with a
responsibility to organize all workers, immigrant
and native-born alike. They see unions as part
of a broader movement for social change in
general.

In 1986, the AFL-CIO supported the Immigration
Reform and Control Act, because it contained
employer sanctions. This provision said employers
could only hire people with legal immigration
status. In effect, the law made it a federal
crime for an undocumented person to hold a job.
Since passage of the law, immigration raids have
led to firings and deportations of thousands of
people in workplaces across the country. In many
cases employers have used the law as a way to
intimidate immigrant workers, and rid themselves
of those trying to organize unions and protest
bad wages and conditions.

Transnational corporations invest in developing
countries like Mexico, moving production to
wherever wages are lowest. Treaties like the
North American Free Trade Agreement promote low
wages, privatization, the dumping of agricultural
products, and other conditions that increase
corporate profits. But those measures also
impoverish and displace people, forcing them to
migrate to survive.

When those displaced people arrive in the United
States, corporate employers use their hunger and
vulnerability to enforce a system of low wages
and fear. In this system, corporations are aided
by U.S. immigration laws. While they're always
presented in the media as a means of controlling
borders, and keeping people from crossing them,
for the last hundred years they've been the means
of regulating the supply, and consequently the
price, of immigrant labor.

When the Immigration Reform and Control Act of
1986 criminalized work for undocumented
immigrants, it was a subsidy or gift to
employers. When working becomes illegal, it's
much harder for workers to organize unions, go on
strike, and fight for better conditions.

Immigration agents now check documents workers
must fill out to get a job, and require employers
to fire those whose documents are in question.
In Washington state, they did this in the middle
of a union drive among apple workers, and fired
700 people. That organizing effort was broken.
Smithfield Foods cooperated in raids and firings
at its huge Tarheel, North Carolina meatpacking
plant. Workers only overcame the terror they
caused when citizens and immigrants, African
Americans and Mexicans, agreed to defend the jobs
of all workers, and the right of everyone to join
the union. When they won their union drive as a
result in 2007, it was the largest private-sector
union victory in years.

Immigrants are fighters. In 1992 the drywallers
stopped construction for a year from Santa
Barbara to the Mexican border. They've gone on
strike at factories, office buildings, laundries,
hotels and fields. Some unions today are
growing, and they're mostly the ones that know
immigrant workers will fight to make things
better. The battles fought by immigrants over
the last twenty years changed the politics of
cities like Los Angeles, and are helping to make
unions strong today.

Because of experiences like these, in 1999 the
previous AFL-CIO support for employer sanctions
was overturned by grassroots immigrant rights
coalitions and labor councils around the country.

JOIN THE BOYCOTT, DIVESTMENT AND
SANCTIONS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ISRAEL

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS) movement to challenge Israeli
apartheid is gaining momentum throughout the world. BDS is a non-violent
form of resistance, which played an instrumental role against South
African apartheid in the 1980’s. It’s simple: as long as Israel
continues to violate human rights, no city, state, country, or company
should invest in or support it.

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra's (IPO) is coming to Los Angeles as
part of its annual US tour to create goodwill for Israel and divert the
public’s attention from its oppression of the Palestinians.

The Orchestra actively participates in whitewashing Israel's apartheid
policies by serving as cultural ambassadors for Israel, and supporting
the Israeli government's “Brand Israel” public relation initiative. The
orchestra refrains from criticism of Israel's policies, and is described
by theAmerican Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra
http://www.afipo.org/ipo as Israel’s finest cultural emissary,” which
“travels throughout the world…The goodwill created by these tours...is
of enormous value to the State of Israel. As a result, the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra maintains its position at the forefront of
cultural diplomacy and the international music scene.
Groups across the country will protest the Orchestra as it stops in Fort
Lauderdale, New York City, Seattle and San Francisco before arriving at
Los Angeles.

One corporate sponsor
http://www.afipo.org/support/donor-recognition of the IPO's US tour is
Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev, who hosted a gala fundraiser
http://www.observer.com/2010/daily-transom/diamonds-and-champagne-marvin last
November for the IPO tour at his New York jewelry store. The IPO thus
partners with Leviev's companies though they have been shunned

 by
UNICEF, CARE, Oxfam, the British and Norwegian governments, Hollywood
stars and international investment firms due to Leviev’s construction of
Israeli settlements and involvement in human rights abuses in the
diamond industry in Southern Africa.

Across the Middle East, from Egypt to Bahrain, Tunisia to Yemen, from
Syria to Iran t Libya citizens are mobilizing to challenge their
repressive governments. Join us in the street to support Palestinians
right to be free from Israeli repression, occupation and
apartheid! *Tell the Israeli Orchestra, Apartheid is Out of Tune!*

[LAAMN] US Veto of Israeli Settlement Resolution Defies the Rise of Popular Democracy in Mid-East

Veto of Israeli Settlement Resolution Puts U.S. on Wrong Side of History
By Josh Ruebner, AlterNet February 24, 2011

When U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice thrust a solitary
American arm into the air last Friday to cast the Obama Administration¹s
first-ever Security Council veto in defense of Israel¹s illegal settlements,
the United States regrettably placed itself squarely on the wrong side of
history as movements for freedom and democracy revolutionize the Middle
East. This veto -- the fortieth cast by the United States since 1967 in
defense of Israel¹s illegal military occupation of Arab lands and the
illegal policies it pursues to maintain it -- represents much more than the
United States yet again acting to shield Israel from accountability for its
blatant violations of international law.

The 14-1 veto of the mildly-worded draft resolution reaffirming that
Israel¹s settlements in the occupied Palestinian West Bank and East
Jerusalem are illegal and constitute a major obstacle to the achievement of
a just, lasting and comprehensive peace laid bare the contradictions in the
Obama Administration¹s approach to Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. It
revealed the growing isolation and irrelevancy of the United States in
resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of international
law. The vote also demonstrated the failure of U.S. diplomacy to adapt to a
new Middle East in which grassroots movements increasingly demand that
governments are held accountable to human rights standards.

The U.S. veto exposed an Obama Administration deeply confused about how to
pursue Israeli-Palestinian peace. Having spent its first two years in office
decrying Israeli settlement activity -- President Obama stated in his June
2009 address to the Muslim world in Cairo that The United States does not
accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements -- and pushing for
its cessation to set the right tone for a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian
negotiations, the United States found itself hard-pressed to explain its
veto. Paradoxically, Rice reserved the Obama Administration¹s harshest
condemnation of Israeli settlements to explain the U.S. veto, affirming that
we reject in the strongest terms the legitimacy of continued Israeli
settlement activity, which she termed folly.

If Israeli settlements are folly and the Obama Administration continues to
accept the validity of a 1978 State Department legal memorandum concluding
that Israeli settlements are inconsistent with international law, then the
only rational explanation for deploying the U.S. veto is to attempt to keep
Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking under the sole purview of the United States.
While the patron is allowed to criticize its client, like an over-indulgent
parent brooding over its spoiled child, it will countenance no outside
criticism. In all likelihood, Palestinians pushed ahead with the draft
Security Council resolution -- despite last-minute bargaining efforts by the
United States for a compromise Security Council presidential statement and
reported U.S. threats to cut aid to the Palestinian Authority -- to test its
new-found hypothesis that a U.S.-led ³peace process² cannot succeed due to
the inherent biases of U.S. policy.

The Palestine Papers -- 1,600 documents, maps, and minutes from
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations leaked to Al Jazeera from within the
Palestinian negotiating team -- demonstrate conclusively that regardless of
the occupant in the White House, the United States is far from being the
³honest broker² it claims to be. The papers reveal the United States bending
over backwards to understand and accommodate Israeli considerations and
limitations, while dismissing Palestinian concerns and twisting their arms
to accept Israel¹s demands. The embarrassment caused by the Palestine Papers
resulted in the resignation of long-time lead Palestinian negotiator Saeb
Erekat. But the fallout is such that reportedly no Palestinian can now be
found to accept the position of negotiator as supplicant. Furthermore,
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has disbanded the Negotiations
Support Unit, which provided research and position papers to the Palestinian
negotiating team.

The Palestinian decision to dismantle its negotiating infrastructure and to
take its case directly to the international community is the logical outcome
of its frustration with two decades of a U.S.-sponsored ³peace process² that
yielded neither an end to Israel¹s colonization of Palestinian land nor the
attainment of Palestinian rights. Amid the ferment of freedom and democracy
movements sweeping the Middle East from Morocco to Bahrain, the United
States finds itself a spectator -- unwilling to take sides between
protesters and governments -- to the teetering and downfall of U.S.-backed

Dear Michael,

Glenn Beck's radio show has been dropped from
stations in New York, Philadelphia and just last week, Madison, WI.

But if you want to hear his violent, paranoid
rants, tune in every weekday from 6 am to 9 am
on Los Angeles' KRLA AM 870 or the 25 other
radio stations in California that broadcast Beck.

You, and whoever else is listening, will be
treated to the type of rhetoric that, just in
the last year, led Gregory Giusti to threaten to
firebomb Nancy Pelosi's house,1 drove Charlie
Wilson to make repeated death threats to Senator
Patty Murray,2 and inspired Byron Williams to
attempt to assassinate officials at the Tides
Foundation and ACLU. Williams himself says of
Beck it was the things he exposed that blew my mind.3

Beck's radio show is dangerous, inflammatory,
irresponsible. And it doesn't belong on LA's airwaves.

Beck's television ratings have plummeted in the
last year,4 a promising sign that more and more
people are realizing that Beck's reckless hate,
misinformation, and division don't belong on our airwaves.

Beck even called his own show a recipe for
disaster in a stunning moment of clarity last
week, while issuing a rare apology for his
comparison of Reform Judaism to radicalized Islam.

...here's the thing. I'm on the air for four
hours, every single day. Four hours every day,
live, without a script. That is a recipe for disaster. Glenn Beck, 2/24/115

Given his proclivity for incendiary statements,
we couldn't agree more. Already this year, Beck
has repeatedly equated Nazi tactics with
progressive tactics,6 spouted deranged
theories about how the uprising in Egypt, and
the protests in Wisconsin, are evidence of the
coming new world order of progressives,7 and
ramped up his lies and rhetoric about Frances
Fox Piven, the 78-year-old Professor and civil
rights activist that Beck has falsely accused of
advocating violence. Even after numerous death
threats to Piven were posted on Beck's website, he refused to back off.8

While Beck certainly has a right to have a show,
KRLA doesn't have to broadcast it. In choosing
to do so, they are choosing to amplify Beck's
violent message and the risks that come with it.

The larger the audience of people who can be
exposed to his violent, paranoid, anti-semitic,
hate-mongering, the more dangerous it is. KRLA
should do the responsible thing and stop
promoting Beck's rhetoric in Los Angeles.

CIA And Media Ventriloquism, The War Party's Atrocity Porn

This is a massacre, the frantic Libyan woman,
speaking by telephone while cowering in her
apartment in Tripoli, told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

I hope you know that people around the world are
watching and praying and wanting to do
something, Anderson told her, as if he were a
stage prompter hinting at a performer's next
line. Whether or not she had been given a copy of
the script, the caller performed as expected:
[T]he first step [is to] make Libya a no-fly
zone. If you make Libya a no-fly zone, no more
mercenaries can come in There needs to be
action. How much more waiting, how much more
watching, how much more people dying?...

It's...possible that her call for international
action to impose a no-fly zone was a desperate
plea from a victim, rather than an act of media
ventriloquism in which an anonymous figure
endorsed the first plank of a military campaign
proposed by the same neo-conservative kriegsbund that manipulated us into Iraq.

Surely it was a [no] coincidence that the Cry
in the Night from Libya was echoed on the same
network a few nights later by Iraq war architect,
former World Bank president, and accused war
criminal Paul Wolfowitz, who several days prior
to Cooper's dramatic broadcast called for a
NATO-enforced no fly zone over Libya.

In fact, the day following that interview, an ad
hoc group calling itself the Foreign Policy
Initiative, which coalesced from the remnants of
the Project for a New American Century, published
an open letter to Mr. Obama demanding military
intervention – beginning with a no-fly zone – in
Libya. The neo-con framework for managing the
Libyan crisis would create a regional
protectorate administered by NATO on behalf of
the international community. This would nullify
any effort on the part of Libyans, Egyptians,
Tunisians, and others to achieve true independence.

On previous experience with media campaigns on
behalf of humanitarian conquest, my incurable
cynicism leads me to hear in Cooper's Cry in the
Night a faint but unmistakable echo of the
tearful, palpably earnest testimony of Nayirah
– the wide-eyed Kuwaiti girl who, using an
assumed name to protect her family, described
what had befallen her country in the wake of the Iraqi invasion.

Bravely composing herself as she recounted
horrors no human eyes should behold, the
precociously self-possessed 15-year-old volunteer
nurse related to the Congressional Human Rights
Caucus how Iraqi soldiers stormed into the
al-Addan Hospital, tore newborn infants from
incubators, and hurled them to the floor. A short
time later this testimony was confirmed by
others who offered similarly anguished testimony
before the UN Security Council.

During the three-month build-up to the January
1991 attack on Baghdad, the image of Kuwaiti
incubator babies was endlessly recycled as a
talking point in media interviews, presidential
speeches, and debates in Congress and the UN. A
post-war opinion survey found that the story of
the incubator babies was the single most potent
weapon deployed by the Bush administration in its
campaign to build public support for the attack on Iraq.

This atrocity account was particularly
effective in overcoming the skepticism of people
espousing a progressive point of view...

The trick is to leave the target audience at once
shivering in horror at a spectacle of sub-human
depravity, panting with a visceral desire for
vengeance, and rapturously self-righteous about
the purity of its humane motives. People who
succumb to it are easily subsumed into a hive
mind of officially sanctioned hatred, and
prepared to perpetrate crimes even more hideous
than those that they believe typify the enemy...

[LAAMN] March 8 call-in day against FBI/grand jury repression

2011-03-02 Thread Michael Novick
Committee to Stop FBI Repression

NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY
to Fitzpatrick, Holder and Obama
Tuesday, March 8, 2011

The Grand Jury is still on its witch-hunt and the
FBI is still harassing activists. This must stop.
Please make these calls:
1. Call U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald at
312-353-5300. Then dial 0 (zero) for operator and
ask to leave a message with the Duty Clerk.
2. Call U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder 202-353-1555
3. Call President Obama at 202-456-

Suggested text: “My name is __, I am from
___(city), in __(state). I am calling
_ to demand he call off the Grand Jury and
stop FBI repression against the anti-war and
Palestine solidarity movements. I oppose U.S.
government political repression and support the
right to free speech and the right to assembly of
the 23 activists subpoenaed. We will not be
criminalized. Tell him to stop this McCarthy-type
witch hunt against international solidarity activists!”

If your call doesn’t go through, try again later.

Update: 800 anti-war and international solidarity
activists participated in four regional
conferences, in Chicago, IL; Oakland, CA; Chapel
Hill, NC and New York City to stop U.S. Attorney
Patrick Fitzgerald’s Grand Jury repression.

Still, in the last few weeks, the FBI has
continued to call and harass anti-war organizers,
repressing free speech and the right to organize.
However, all of their intimidation tactics are
bringing a movement closer together to stop war and demand peace.

We demand:
-- Call Off the Grand Jury Witch-hunt Against
International Solidarity Activists!
  -- Support Free Speech!
-- Support the Right to Organize!
  -- Stop FBI Repression!
-- International Solidarity Is Not a Crime!
-- Stop the Criminalization of Arab and Muslim Communities!

Background: Fitzgerald ordered FBI raids on
anti-war and solidarity activists' homes and
subpoenaed fourteen activists in Chicago,
Minneapolis, and Michigan on September 24, 2010.
All 14 refused to speak before the Grand Jury in
October. Then, 9 more Palestine solidarity
activists, most Arab-Americans, were subpoenaed
to appear at the Grand Jury on January 25, 2011,
launching renewed protests. There are now 23 who
assert their right to not participate in Fitzgerald’s witch-hunt.

The Grand Jury is a secret and closed
inquisition, with no judge, and no press. The
U.S. Attorney controls the entire proceedings and
hand picks the jurors, and the solidarity
activists are not allowed a lawyer. Even the date
when the Grand Jury ends is a secret.

So please make these calls to those in charge of
the repression aimed against anti-war leaders and
the growing Palestine solidarity movement.
