Early in October (probably around the 5th), I'll be removing the
puppet and hiera interfaces from wikitech, and migrating any settings
or content from there to the new Horizon system. With luck the
transitional period (when the wikitech settings are still in force but
not actually visible) will be brief. After that, we'll have a single,
Horizon-based config that should generally work more consistently than
either the old Wikitech system or the current mishmash.

We've just migrated all puppet role settings from Wikitech to Horizon,
and removed the Wikitech puppet configuration UI. So, from now on,
Horizon holds the one canonical representation of what roles are applied
to a given instance.

Hiera config is still a composite of the Wikitech hiera pages and the
Horizon settings. We may actually keep it this way indefinitely since
there are some advantages to having free-form hiera settings stored on a
wiki page with an edit history. I'm still on the fence about this, so I
welcome your thoughts.

[Labs-l] Tool Labs & Java: new docs!

2016-10-19 Thread Bryan Davis
Ever have questions about how to run java code on Tool Labs but were
afraid to ask? Are you a local expert on the quirks of Java on our
precise or trusty job grid nodes? Check out the new help page [0]
started by Tool Labs user ASammour!

Does you language of choice have an easy to find list of tips and
tricks? If not, why not? It's a wiki folks, so anyone can edit. :)

[Labs-l] React on tools labs?

2016-10-19 Thread Magnus Manske
I was thinking about trying out some React on Tools Labs, maybe write and
publish some components to be re-used in other tools or by third-party
developers.

Questions:
* Am I allowed to use React on Tools Labs? The license is not OSI-approved,
though AFAIK the Facebook addendum to the BSD license does not really apply
to us.
* If so, is there an "official" way to set up React in a tool?
* node/npm versions on Tools Labs are ancient; are current versions (e.g.
node 4) installed somewhere? Or do I have to roll a new VM for this?

Thanks,
Magnus
