Popular Mechanics has put their archives on line, so of course I had to do
a search for lace. Most of the articles were about shoe laces and leather
work, a couple were for using lace as textures on wood. But there were
these three:

There is a very useful book on Magic Threads written by Christine
Springett, which explains all if people are not sure of what to do. I
find it invaluable!! It is available from most suppliers, certainly
the one's I get things from.
