Might be an idea Susan, but if you are making Russian lace, the fillings are done at the same time as the lace, when you get to the last pinhole around an area of filling, that is when you do it.

Also, working it at the same time means you don't have to rewind bobbins to do the fillings - you don't have to sew in new pairs and you don't have to sew out the pairs when you have done the filling and thereby have lots of knots. Some fillings are only a few lines of braids and picots, others a little more complex with trails going round, kopeks etc. In some larger pieces you may have many, many patches of fillings, so a lot of joins. Much easier to do it as you go.
