I want to write to the list and clear up all the information/misinformation regarding Hannah and Amanda Moad's house. The details have been confirmed and the Moad's did indeed lose their house and all the contents. Now an explanation of how all of this began. Last week after reading Hannah's note regarding her house, I kept having the nagging feeling that it all sounded somewhat familiar. After mulling it over a couple of days, I went to my lace supplies to find a note which has been hanging out in one of my bobbin boxes for the last couple of years. I keep notes in there whenever I've loaned bobbins out so I can recall who has what. Sure enough, there was a note that Hannah had written to the list a couple of years ago about loaning lacemaking supplies to a friend and the friends house burned down a couple days later with the lace supplies inside. A plea was made for extra lacemaking supplies and I offered to loan some bobbins to them as I didn't really have many extra at the time. Perhaps they received an overwhelming amount or life just got in the way but once the bobbins were sent, I never heard another word. And that was okay but then fast forward to last week. A second house burns down with all the lace supplies. In a town of less than 1500 people to have the only two lacemakers there both lose their homes to fire just seemed to contradict the odds. I then contacted Avital to express my concern since the list was afire with gathering supplies for Hannah and Amanda and I hated to see their generosity exploited. The generosity of this list is amazing and I hope that will continue-but I hope that it will always be tempered with a dose of reality, not all people are always honest, I've learned. Avital and I decided that perhaps a bit checking was in order just to confirm that everything was on the up and up. Both of us wrote to Hannah and I did some research to see if I could find any information about the fire via newspapers or contacts in Ash Grove. This took longer than it usually would as it was the weekend and I live in an entirely different day from the U.S. mainland. Before we had replies from Hannah or could make confirmation, the list was made aware of my suspicions which was never mine nor Avital's intention. My motives in this have not been malicious. I was "burned" in the past by a plea from a list member on another list. Her service dog needed emergency surgery and she could not afford it. She asked the list to help her out and provided a veterinarian's phone number. I called and it was answered as a vet clinic. I inquired as to how much was needed and was told I was the only one who had called so far. Knowing how valuable a service dog is to it's owner, I offered to pay for the entire surgery. Later I found out it was a scam and my credit card number was abused. Since then I've learned to check, check again and even a third time. I have written Hannah an apology for the pain this has caused her at this difficult time. Again, it was never my intention to add to her misery or publicly humiliate her-just to make sure that despite the coincidences, all was on the up and up. I hope now that the well known generosity of this list will kick back into action to help Hannah and Amanda begin to pick up the pieces of their lives again and allow them to continue their lacemaking. As I'm not a member of lace-chat I trust that someone will forward this explanation on to that list. Dona
