Dear Friends, I think you cover the balloons with something greasy first. The lace fabric is dampened with a glue and folded around the balloon - it doesn't attach to the balloon. You would leave a space to pull the popped balloon through after the glue has dried. Indeed, effective :) I used

Another option for the light would be to use a short string of clear Christmas lights that are joined together in a pleasing way. They would not generate the heat. Joining would have to planned in advance, and then done after the string of lights is put into the ball. Love this idea!! Clay
