Long yardages don't have to be done on a roller, Joanna, they can be made on a square pillow with removable blocks down the centre, so that you just keep leapfrogging your blocks. I make my own block pillows out of an easily cut polystyrene insulation board I buy from an insulation supplier specialist quite cheaply, with a bit of thin ply underneath.
The best tip for bidding on eBay I can give is to decide at the beginning just what is the maximum you will pay for an item (don't forget postage) and stick to that. I've bought lots of useful stuff on eBay, but you have to do your homework and make sure you're not paying too much for something (good example, the recent bids for the treen and bone/ivory bobbins).
