Dear Arachnids
I fully agree with Brian and Pierre that it is time museums curators
remembered they are only custodians of the museum property and that the
collections are not their private property; I have heard curators referring to

I am no expert in copyright but am very interested in the subject. Common
sense tells me that the museum can only copyright photographs of objects in
their collection that they took/commissioned themselves, and not the
historical objects themselves that are clearly in the public
Dear All
I write this at the end of a series of complaints from myself and
correspondence with RAMM regarding getting access to a nice collection of

academic access to the collection, so I am giving up.
Just to put on

Hello Dawn,
lace is in German’s museums mostly not on display. The Museum für Kunst und
Gwerbe In Hamburg for example give you the possibility to see them when you
make an appointment weeks before you arrive.
In Abenberg in the south is a museum mostly for lace google it to see when it’s
open.
Hello all
I am planning a trip to Europe next year with a friend. We are attending the
Tonder Festival in Denmark and the OIDFA Congress in Slovenia.
We have about 10 days to fill in travelling by train from Hamburg on June 10th
to Ljubliana on June 20th.
Can anyone suggest some must see lace
Hallo Arachnids,
since I’ll be near Bayeux the first week of June: does anyone of you have the
addresses and opening times of the lace museums in Caen and Bayeux? Anything
else I shouldn’t miss while I’m there?
Best from Berlin, where spring starts at long last, Achim.

Dear Arachnes,
Just to add to the discussion. The amount of lace on display in the Cecil
Higgins at Bedford, now rebranded the Higgins bedford has been drastically
reduced since the remodelling (and I gather the same is true of Luton).
Although the collection *is* still there and they do have
Dear Leonard
I live close to Bedford and have visited the Higgins several times since it
re-opened after the refurbishment. Although the lace that is now on display

There
is also a display of lacemaking equipment
Hi Fellow Arachnids,
Please be aware that some of the lace and textile collection from the Victoria
and Albert Museum is now housed at Blythe House, nr Olympia in West London.
This belongs to the V A but has restricted access. See their website
Just want to thank you all for the fascinating discussion of lace museums.
I have had the joy of visiting a number of these places and am looking
forward to trip late spring to England so I have been furiously taking
notes. What a wonderful community this is!

Dear Janice,
Although it is not all that close to Zurich (55 minutes by car according to
googlemaps) there is a lace museum in St. Gallen, Switzerland that has
been on my bucket list for some time. It has pieces of hand made lace that

I'm planning a trip to Europe (with mom) partly to see some of the lace

Yes, itâs a nice museum but be aware that itâs not in central London,
itâs in Blackheath which is about 8 miles from the centre of London, at
least half an hour driving, but could be much more depending on the traffic,
or 20+ minutes on the train - remembering that one of the London stations
I do have the Museum of Costume and lace on my Pinterest board for museums
in Belgium and the Netherlands,

unfortunately I had it located at the Brussels airport so maybe it got
missed. I just fixed it. Unfortunately
Actually it's in Greenwich not Blackheath - on the west side of Greenwich

Dear Meghann,
Having sent you to Laurie's site, I am surprised to see that she didn't

The Kantcentrum museum in Bruges has been moved (only a little way) and
remodelled . It opened last year and I visited last October. I was very
impressed. It is modern, with exhibits of fantastic lace, and interactive
displays of how lace, both bobbin and needle, is made. Well worth a visit.
I was at both the Kantmuseum in Bruges and the Museum of Costume and Lace
in Brussels last fall which were mentioned in other posts. Here's my take:
Bruges: The museum is quite small, but nice, and they do daily
demonstrations, but be sure to check the times before you go. I think the

In response to Jo's note I was trying to enter data on our local museum to the
LOKK webpage. And I discovered that part of the Art Institute of Chicago's
lace collection is online. Unfortunately only 399 pieces out of over 1000 are
listed online, and only some of those have photos attached. And
I'm shocked to hear about the Brugge lace school and museum closing, it has
been a goal of mine to get there! On a positive note, I just found out about
the new lace museum that opened this year in Calais, which may have already
been discussed on Arachne but missed by me. The website is

Sorry for the delay but life isn't only lace. Hope I could finish it

Hello Lacefriends,
Let's go along with the subject. From Bayeux it isn't a long way to
Courseulles sur Mer. We arrived just before the Musée du Vieux C. And
the lady was very sad to tell me that there aren't lots of laces. but I
looked at them and found some interesting caps for folk-costumes,
Dear Ilske,
Thank you for your posting about museums in France. I hope to be in the
Caen/Bayeaux area over Christmas week this year as my DD will be teaching
English in the Rouen school district until May 2007. We are hoping to rent a
gite for the week, possibly in Honfleur. Does anyone

I wonder if the actual outcome at the Pitt Rivers Museum will be that they

The only thing I've ever seen on the subject is the booklet about Lace Museums
