As far as I remember champagne corks are made up of several different layers of 
cork, and I think they use proper cork  not the construct of ground up bits. 
The bottling process does tend to compress the cork a lot - they start out 
shaped like a shuttlecock - it could be that it is a bit more dense after use.

I stab my pricker into the little beeswax pot which seems to work, but I cannot 
use that for the lazy susan, it's too hard & the little piece of cork just 
slides off and lurks in the bottom of the soft glasses case I keep them in, I 
need to try some of your suggestions.
