Thank you Jane! You helped me gel the options that were whirling in my mind. I’ve just given it a try & come upon a snag. Bedfordshire is worked right side up & when I made the final cross-twist, the bead got twisted/buried. The only way I could get the bead to sit/stay on top was to cloth

I don't see why not. In a windmill, you are working with each pair as if it is a single thread. To add a bead, you can use a sewing. It is just as easy to pull two threads through most beads as it is one, so use a double sewing (the two bobbins of one pair passed through the two loops of the
