What you wrote is true, especially when you travel on an international flight outside of the American continent. The trouble was on a flight from Canada to the USA. When asked nobody knew about it.

Since 1992 my husband and I have spend a couple of weeks each year in
Canada and we never had a problem getting our GST back.
Before you check in at an airport, you have to go to a special custom
office - at the airport -, where they look at your receipts and stamp them
when they fit the requirements. If they want to, they can check your
luggage, to see if the goods are really taken out of the country.

So you have to go to customs before you check in !!

Back home you can fill in the form, add the stamped receipts, send it to
Canada and within a couple of weeks the money is in your bank account
It is in fact very simple. In the custom office we never had to wait longer
than 10 minutes.

This year we are going to Canada for 3 months!!!! We leave the 1st of July
and will be back home the 1st of October. I hope to attend a Lace Day of
the Simcoe County Lacemakers in September!

Hello Lacemakers,

If anyone is going to be returning across the border at Sault Ste. Marie,
Ontario, they have a customs booth right in the duty free shop where they
process your refund right there and you receive your money on the spot. We
cross the border quite often, so have done this a few times. There are
some conditions - I think your GST rebate amount has to be at least $14CDN
and receipts must be at least $50CDN, though you might want to check this.

I'll be thinking of everyone in Montreal - unfortunately it was not
possible for me to attend this year.

Happy lacing,
Cindy Rusak - in windy Wisconsin

I am learning something new.
I decided to look up the GST refund. Apart from the short-term
accommodation, you can only use receipts for $50.00 purchases or
more, and have your receipts verified by a customs agent then you can
take them with you across the border, and mail them with the form for
the refund (in due course).
Info is here:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/rc4031/rc4031-e.html

Receipts for food, alcohol or tobacco cannot be used.
I note you wouldl be paying the Quebec sales tax of 7.5% while in QC,
where applicable, but you won't get any of that back, if I understand
the form correctly.
If the item is worth more than $250 you have to show it, along with
the receipt, to get the receipt stamped. Less than that, you just need
to send it with the boarding pass when you mail in for the refund.

As a seller of goods in Canada, I don't collect GST - my business
falling somewhat less than the $30K minimum sales level.

It would seem a worthwile exercise for the accommodation, anyway, if
costs are in the $3K arena, then 7% of that is worth getting back, and
you don't need to get any receipts stamped at the airport

Yes, it does. You're supposed to mail it in to the address on the
form. (Seeing as how the government is refunding the tax, you'll
probably have to wait a while to get it :-D) Note that only the federal
GST is refunded, not the provincial sales tax - known as TPS in Quebec.
When you get your restaurant bill in Montreal and see TPS, it's easy to
misread it as tips and think that a service charge has been added. It
hasn't - that's the provincial sales tax. About the only good thing
about these taxes is that combined, they amount to 15%. And since
that's the usual tip, it makes it easy to calculate what you should
leave for good service.
