Dear Margery, In the 40s, I had boots with buttons - small leather-covered domes, with a metal loop behind that was used to sew the buttons on. And I had a button hook to help fasten the buttons - that was about four inches long, with a mother-of-pearl handle and a sturdy metal hook. I've
