For as long as I can remember, in Spain have been used orange card
prickings. An especial thicker card (now practically disappeared) was
manufactured for working bobbin lace. Its thickness let the lacemakers
work several times the same pattern.
I don't know the reason for choosing this colour,
My understanding is that it is hard to copy prickings on red.
So to 'protect' the pattern and designer they published it on red.
