"Here are bobbins for sale on ebay in a shape that I've not come across
before. Any suggestions on the region they might come from or what
type of lace they'd be used for? Or are they lacemaking bobbins at all?"

"Those aren't lace bobbins, they're Gobelin-style tapestry bobbins. The
long smooth point enables the weaver to manoeuvre the bobbin through
the warp threads of a tapestry loom."

This is funny - and an eye-opener for me. When I first started bobbin lace some years
ago, the only ones available locally were the poorly-crafted ones from you-know-where.
In a craft store I found some of these very bobbins in plastic, and bought them up.
I have used them ever since! I am slowly amassing "regular" bobbins (and thank-you,
Bev Walker, the square bobbins arrived yesterday!), and will likely eventually retire
them, but they work!
