To add to Robin's info, I particularly like the bombyx silk from
Treenway, sizes 60/2 and 120/2 for BL (for Torchon, and Beds. and
Bucks, respectively). I also like to dye smaller skeins myself,
expecting variegated surprises, and getting them <g>
At a lace day I bought a spool of Yaspé silk, a brand from
bart-francis who also do put-ups of silk/bamboo, silk/cashmere, and
other blends. Other silk thread companies offer the blends, as well.
A glance in Brenda's Threads for Lace gives a heap of choices of silk
thread. True, they aren't available just anywhere - but worth a search
:)

I *love* working in silk, much preferring it over cotton and linen.  I
like the soft drape.  Even the slippery ones are kept under control
