My student-bobbins that I'm using for Flanders (myself being the student)
have that 'sound' to them like you describe, and I have supposed they are
made of boxwood, a more recent harvest than yours to be sure, and the wood
therefore younger, somewhat less dense than old wood, but denser than
other inexpensive, available woods. A couple of vintage continentals in
my stash are similar to the ones you describe.

I like to think that a boxwood hedge that had been growing for a century
or more, in the way of a 'new development' circa 1850, yielded heaps of
wood for bobbins, for generations to come.
