If memory serves me correctly, in a much later IOLI bulletin, in an
article on Ipswich lace, I read that the bobbins were made from a
particularly rush that grew in the area - the rush itself must have
resembled bamboo? I think there are some of the bobbins still in existence
(and I think I have a photo of them sent to me by a lace friend, somewhere
in the clutter that is my lace place....).
