Pictures of this lace were just posted on Facebook. The maker is Manca
Ahlin who will be one of the lecturers on OIDFA Congress 2016 in Ljubljana,
Slovenia.
Manca lives and works in New York. She grew up in Žiri, one of the most
important Slovene lace making centres, known for its exquisite
(I changed the Subject, so this will be archived under artist's name.)
Manca is an Architect, whose early lacemaking, is sometimes influential in
her chosen career.

Yes, they are, just depends on what part of the country you're in on which
common name you use. I called them lightening bugs (LIT'an) when I was a
kid in the south. Draw out that i (long i).
With “thread” of that thickness you would need to move one rope at a time; the
pic with the hammer in lower left corner clearly shows there are two worker
pairs.
