[lace] Bobbin storage
I am wondering how you store your bobbins when they are not in use? Are you storing English Midlands or Continentals? I just finished a project. For the first time (probably in my life) I do not have any bobbins on a pillow. I discovered that I have many more bobbins than places to store them. Since I am going to the IOLI Convention this year I am going to try not to start anything new. I have plenty of embroidery to work on so I won't be idle for the next month. I hate to bring this up, yet again, but I have been trying to post a new picture to Flickr and have had no luck. While I am the sponsor of the our group on the site, Sue Babbs is the technical expert in our list. Since the last time I tried to upload, it appears that Flickr has once again made changes to the way we upload pictures. So, needless to say, I'm frustrated. I went to the Arachne archives to see if there was a more recent post from Sue about the changes, and did not see anything. And oddly enough, the posts on the Arachne archives are not in any order, date-wise, so there's another problem. What I did see was an old post from David Collier who had suggested we create a closed group on Facebook. I don't remember seeing this when he posted it, but it appeals to me more and more. Any other comments? I may be the only dunce in the group at this point. I had a head injury eleven months ago, and have been making slow progress back, but still can't remember stuff a lot! Thankfully, I was able to successfully get back to my Binche a month or so ago and was able to finish a piece that had been sitting idle for over a year! This is what I want to post! [lace] Needle lace resources
Thank you Devon Lorelei! I'm on digest so just now received your excellent suggestions links. Devon, my lace guild is demonstrating various techniques on Sunday at a Victorian home owned by a historical society. In an effort to be relevant to my surroundings, I thought it would be helpful to know what type of needle lace would have been worn when the house was new in 1862. I will take modern samples but now I can use my Lace app ( iPad if there is wifi available) to illustrate this beautiful technique. Sorry to say, my grasp of lace history is weak so when my usual searches didn't return enough info, I asked for help. Lorelei, all I can say is yowza! The photos posted on Ning are beyond delicious your analysis of point de gaze stitches their uses is excellent. Plenty to digest before 1pm on Sunday! Thanks for reminding me that one of my favorite pieces of lace is the point de gaze fan in the Koon collection. BTW--I wanted to thank you for posting your tape! lace lesson. There are loads of individual diagrams for specific points in the pattern. Thorough oh so helpful! Re: [lace] Bobbin storage
I am wondering how you store your bobbins when they are not in use? Liz, I use those plastic pencil boxes that kids use for school! One year I picked up a couple dozen on clearance for 25cents each and passed them out to our guild during retreat. They stack nicely! I just need to add some labels. In addition to the new blue ones I bought, now I also have a few that my kids actually used in elementary school. I also use one as a tool box in my lace tote bag. Maybe you'll see it at convention! It's purple! I also have a few rectangular tins that I use too. Anita Hansen who spend the day working on bobbin rolls for the Arachne lunch which will be on Tuesday during the convention. Re: [lace] Bobbin storage
After years of putting bobbins in small cabinets with little drawers, plastic shoe boxes, and even plastic bags, I decided I needed something better. I bought a vertical cabinet with seven drawers. Midlands went in the top drawer, and continentals were sorted by size and style into the other drawers. A style with only a few were bundled with elastic bands. Large quantities were loose in a drawer. One drawer is just the odd bobbins that don't match any set. (It's surprising how many odd bobbins I have accumulated.) This cabinet works quite well -- as long as I have several projects in process on the shelf!! It I stripped all my pillows, these drawers would not hold them. I think I may need a second cabinet. After ending some projects recently, my midlands drawer was over-full. I had to put the bobbins neatly in plastic baggies so they could lie flat and straight before they would fit. I'm still missing a bunch of my favorite midlands, so I'm sure there's a project or two on my shelf with midlands. (I have enough to do Miss Channers mat, so that project is on my list to do next year.) I bought a similar cabinet for my lace tools and threads. It was amazing how many thread spools I have now that they are collected into one place. I sorted the cotton, linen and other threads. Now it's easier to 'shop' for thread for a project. ( I wish I had inventoried them before going to lace conference. I managed to buy duplicate spools of some sizes of thread.) When I started lacemaking, I never dreamed I would acquire this many pillows, bobbins, etc. Storage of supplies can indeed be a challenge. Alice in Oregon -- in the middle of a record-setting heat wave. PNW Lace Conference went very well. Now I can rest up. Don't panic, Clay, things are not very different. I am a bit pushed for time, so I randomly selected a photo and uploaded easily. I'll send you the instructions again in a minute.
