[lace] Tatting kit.

2016-08-30 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I have replied to Linda privately.
Basically, the "Emergency" kit that lives in my handbag is a small
coin-sized pouch with shuttles and a cropped pattern - just the minimum
amount of instructions, for a simple ring and chain piece! (No Ball of
thread -that is too bulky,). It is just something to fiddle with in Dr.
waiting rooms, etc!!

My other "Out and about" kit is slightly larger, and has the ongoing
tatting, ball, spare shuttle, small snips or scissors, crochet hook, etc.
That pouch measures about 7X5 inches.

Re: [lace] Dividing pins help

2016-08-30 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Sewing needles are designed to snap, pins are designed to bend. So it depends
on whether you would prefer a mistreated divider to bend or to snap, and
choose an appropriate item for the shank.

Epoxy resin (Araldite) would be my choice for glue, but that does make it
necessary to find some way of supporting it whilst the glue sets - even if
using the rapid/20 minute type.

David,
Sorry, can't help you on the glue issue.

>From your description of sewing needles with pins glued on top, it sounds
like you want fine pins for dividers. Have you tried "silk pins" for dress
making? Larger, both in length and wire size would be corsage pins?

See if you can get any 'watch Chrystal' cement, it is made for fastening
'glass' to metal.

I used it when I was a jeweler. I got it from a jewelry supplier. May be
your local jeweler can get it for you or fasten the ones you have/take in to
him/her.

Also you should have all parts very clean (use acetone or something like
that).

Hope this helps

Subject: [lace] Dividing pins help

Dear Friends,
Over the years I have found the best dividing pins to be ordinary
sewing needles with a middle sized bead glued on the top.

I recently broke my second last one and tried making new ones but
when I used the acid free craft glue it didn't hold. Could someone
please tell me what glue they would recommend?

I also use these for the occasional bit of pricking in a tight spot.
Many thanks

You need a glue that will stick to metal and glass.  Check the details on
your available super glues to find the right one.

[lace] OIDFA - 2018 Congress Cancellation (Memo 2)

2016-08-30 Thread Jeriames
I was taught at an early age to communicate truthfully, though I did know
when adults were not being truthful to me. Also, that (without a college
degree or even having taken any college courses) I was recruited by The New
York Times to work on school newspapers in the early 1960s. I received
excellent counseling then from a wise boss - to read at least 3 different
newspapers with different agendas each day for a more realistic and
comprehensive overall view of the news (those were the days of the
Kennedy/Johnson
presidential administrations and the war in Vietnam), and to try to not slant
the *news* - just state the verifiable facts.

Ordinarily, I would not ask this, but feel I should request that someone
who received my memo yesterday comment on it (attaching the content of that
memo) so that the people who do not receive mail from AOL (my carrier for
e-mail) will know what was reported.

Hopefully, you all share with lacemakers you know who do not subscribe to
Arachne. Lacemakers are usually wise people with understanding of how
something can go terribly wrong with lace you are making, or with
relationships between people. You will understand the international lace
community
(and that includes Arachne members) needs to stop scuffles between volunteers
working on behalf of various lace organizations. Now.

In lace friendship to you all,

Jeri Ames in Maine USA

Re: [lace] OIDFA - 2018 Congress Cancellation

2016-08-30 Thread Ilske Thomsen
Laurie Waters send us a link

http://lacenews.net

in which we find a lot of the details why the OIDFA meeting in Bruges is
cancelled. I won’t discus this because I am not familiar with the law in
Belgium about such events and I wasn’t personally involved in the
discussions between OIDFA and the people in Bruges. But I hope in the next
OIDFA bulletin we will be informed a bit better.
I am wondering why it wasn’t possible to find a solution together. On the
other hand the regulations in associations like OIDFA and in government laws
aren’t always understandable for us the citizens.
We have two possibilities to go to the lace festival in Bruges in 2018 or
looking forward to the OIDFA meeting in 2020.
