[lace] help finding books

2017-10-04 Thread Rick & Sharon Whiteley
Can anyone tell me where one can acquire the bookmark booklets by April Lind?
One of our members has lost hers (has no idea how) and really wants another
copy. I wouldn’t mind a copy of both myself, they’re very hand to have
around. Thanks Sharon on Vancouver Island

Re: [lace] Samplers Exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge

(Someone please acknowledge this message, so interested people can look for
it in today's archive.)

Thank you, Louise Bailey.  Our needlework history is important.  Stitched
samplers - documents - also help with genealogy research about our ancestors.

In the U.S., the Sampler Archive Project is currently attempting to document
all American samplers, which is to be a great free data base available to
all.  There is a 20-page pdf describing this at:

https://www.neh.gov/files/grants/university_of_delaware_the_sampler_archive_p
roject.pdf

and, this is also interesting:

https://www1.udel.edu/researchmagazine/issue/vol3_no1_humanities/stitches_in_
time.html

It is possible the U.K.'s samplers are also being documented by researchers.
The historic samplers held in the U.K.'s museums have received a great deal
of attention in my library, with comprehensive references sent to Arachne in
August 2014.  Some remarkable samplers are executed in needle lace.  If
interested, please go to our archive for references:

https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/msg45965.html

Carol Humphrey, the Honorary Keeper of Textiles at The Fitzwilliam, is a
recognized expert on "Quaker School Girl Samplers from Ackworth"  (no lace).
You can G**gl* search that title to learn about her 2006 232-page hardback
published by Needleprint, ISBN 978-0-9552086-1-4.  You'll not find needle
lace samplers.  You will find marking and literacy samplers - alphabets,
lists of family members, texts inspired by religion, maps, and their famous
medallion designs that could be reproduced today into wonderful cross stitched
ornaments.

You can also access Amazon to see what is currently available by Carol
Humphrey, as recommended by Louise.

[lace] Samplers Exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambrudge

2017-10-04 Thread Louise Bailey
Passing the Fitz yesterday amongst all the banner for the new Degas exhibition
I noticed one for an exhibition "Sampled lives".

Sampled Lives: samplers from the Fitzwilliam Museum

Saturday 6 May 2017 to Sunday 8 April 2018

Showcasing over 100 samplers from the Museum's excellent but often unseen
collection, this display highlights the importance of samplers as documentary
evidence of past lives.

These beautifully embroidered and stitched samplers illuminate the lives of
girls and women, from mid-17th century English Quakers to early 20th century
school pupils, encompassing their education, employment, religion, family,
societal status and needlework skills. The display also highlights the
individuality of each sampler, which in some cases is the only surviving
document to record the existence of an ordinary young woman.

This display will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue by Carol
Humphrey, Honorary Keeper of Textiles, available to purchase from the
Courtyard Shop from the end of May. (and on Amazon)

PLEASE NOTE Unfortunately this exhibition has stepped access only and is
therefore not suitable for wheelchair users. Visit
www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/onlineresources to discover themes and highlights of
the exhibition.

Louise
In cloudy Cambridge, where I would have much preferred visiting the Fitz than
the team building event I was on.

Hi Alice and fellow Arachnids,

Thank you Alice for this link. I don’t think you have been “dropped off”
the list. It has been somewhat quiet.

Happy lace making,

Joepie in Sussex, UK where today should be a lovely sunny autumn day.

This is a test message. I've received no Arachne messages for 5 days. Is the
list very quiet? Or have I been dropped off it.

Ruskin Lace --
A friend mentioned she was going to take a class in Ruskin Lace. I wasn't
familiar with the lace so looked online. There's a very nice explanation and
samples on Elizabeth Prickett's webpage:

http://www.ruskinlace.org.uk/index.html

Needlelace people might be interested in giving it a look.

Alice in Oregon -- where it's cool at night and sort of warm in the afternoon.
