Re: [lace] I'm still here after all these years...

2019-04-28 Thread Bev Walker
Hello Jane and everyone
Me, too (still here).
We have it in writing, 1995 was the start. There are messages in our own
Archive regarding our 20th Anniversary in 2015
 https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/

and Liz Reynolds the list-founder mentions the start in the first sentence
at this page:
http://www.arachne.com/lace/list_instructions.html

*and* I found one of my commemorative bobbins inscribed 6th Anniversary
2001 :)
When I figure out how to post to flikr will share its photo. Also my
aluminum one from 1998 by Ends 'n' Odds, the lovely Tregallas family.

In 1997 the lace list was split in two, one for lace-related topics only,
the other for off-topic chatter. Quality control.

[lace] I'm still here after all these years...

2019-04-28 Thread Jane Partridge
I probably shouldn't admit to this in these days of data protection, etc, but
back in October 1996 I printed off the Arachne Bios, and put them in a folder,
which I've still got! Should I shred them? Martha, your bio is amongst them,
so you were definitely a member by then. Checking the old Arachne Handbook
(which Patty Dowden updated in 2000), she referred to the third anniversary in
April as if it was April 2000, which would make the start year 1997 - possibly
getting confused as that was the year Lace separated from Lace-Chat. I'm not
sure whether it was actually 1995 or 1996, only that it started on April 12 and
I joined in July of the first year, after it was mentioned on
uk.rec.crafts.needlework (and I think that may still be going -
rec.crafts.needlework was last time I looked, which may be a couple of years
ago now, days go so quickly). The reason the list split was, according to
the handbook, that in February 1997 Arachne had over 600 members - I know it
went!
over 1,000 in the days when we could quiz "the major" (as we affectionately
called the server!) as to the number of members - Avital, do you know how many
members there are now? It is rare for us now to produce the 40 or so messages a
day we were getting to then, so I wonder if it's worth still having two
separate lists?

I cannot recall just when I joined, but it has been a very long time!
Probably 1990s. And like Nancy I did not trust online storage. Still don???t
in fact...that???s why I keep,so,many backups!

Re: [lace] the very start of Arachne

2019-04-28 Thread Karen ZM
I cannot remember exactly when I discovered and joined Arachne, but I do
know that 25 years ago, Malta did not yet have Internet or, if at all, it
may have been only available to large companies and only dial-up if at all.
When we bought the first family computer, it was around 23 years ago and
then we only had limited dial-up at an exorbitant cost.our costs for
internet and mobile phone here are still some of the highest in Europe and
in the world too.

[lace] On Arachne since 1996

2019-04-28 Thread N.A. Neff
I think I must have joined in 1996 because I'd already been on the list
quite a while when we had our get-together in Nottingham. I was still a
relatively new lacemaker when I joined so you all were a godsend. I can
check how early, actually, because I even printed out some of the early
posts, not yet entirely comfortable with electronic-only storage! Wow,
things sure change in a quarter of a century.

Pleased Arachne is still going strong. It's such a valuable resource.

Re: [lace] 25 years on Arachne

2019-04-28 Thread Clay Blackwell
I think the t was earlier than 1998. I discovered lacemaking that year, and I
believe Arachne had been active for a year or two before that! But regardless,
if Arachne had not been there, I never would have gotten so hooked!

[lace] goodie bags

2019-04-28 Thread Alex Stillwell
Hi Liz

Sadly I gave up international travelling a few years ago for the same reasons
and I miss the conventions. However, I still treasure my goodie bags and
contents. I still have goodie bag bobbins from the IOLI convention 1988. One
is a pottery bobbin the other wooden that I later found out had been made by
my friends husband. I added a spangle of terra cotta beads from the same
goodie bag. The beads are irregular as home-made items tend to be; they were
made to be enjoyed and they are both enjoyed and the time taken to make them
is appreciated. Since then I have collected other goodie bag and their
contents. These items all carry memories.

Long may Arachne last and thank you Devon for keeping us up-to-date on safe
use of emails

Blow the dust

I am sure it was before 2000. Was it 1997 or 98 or 99 I am unable to remember
exactly and all those people who could give a clue aren’t any longer with me.
Anyway I am a longstanding member too and I must add arachne helped me to
practise my English.

[lace] On Arachne for a long time

2019-04-28 Thread Alice Howell
I joined Arachne just after the first anniversary.  My husband set up a
computer for me, sat me down, and said "Type something".  I typed 'Bobbin
lace', Arachne was the first thing that popped up, and the rest is history.  I
had been making lace only a couple years and learned so very much from the
discussions.

The next year the members started talking about having a conference, and
Arachne 98 came into being, thanks to two generous ladies in Nottingham,
England. I was able to meet 60 of you in person and made several good friends,
one of whom lives only 40 miles from me. We went all the way to England to meet.

Arachne is a tremendous resource for information.  Thank you to Liz for
starting the List, and maintaining it all these years.

here at last
