RE: [lace] bobbin identification

2022-07-28 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Fellow Arachnids,

These bobbins are not Bucks point bobbins. I think they were probably made by
a Dutchman living in the UK near Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells and who used to
dabble in continental style lace bobbins. He never made two the same, although
they were quite beautifully executed. All the silver inlay was sourced from
silver scrap, such as broken silver propelling pencils, broken jewellery etc.

It is a long time since I have seen him and I am afraid I will have to look
through a lot of paperwork to come across his name which I haven’t got time
for at present. But I would have thought that he has passed away as he was old
even then (more than 25 years ago) and not a well man.

Hope that helps a little.

Happy lacemaking,
Joepie in warm and mainly sunny Sussex, UK.

But is it a bucks point model? Some are rose wood and inlay of silver. Anyone

Could you put some clear photos up on the Arachne site on Flickr, please?
Without seeing the bobbins it is impossible to identify them. Even from photos

2022-06-26 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi,

As a Dutch woman, a lace-maker and lace-teacher living in England, who
occasionally designs a few bits for my students I am rather upset about the
tone of the original message. To call someone a “damned Dutch woman” is NOT
something I would have expected on Arachne. Not only that, it lobs all Dutch
women onto one heap. I have never in my life claimed anyone else’s patterns as
my own and always try to give the name of the original designer, where at all
possible, for any pattern I use.

HAPPY lacemaking,

Re: [lace] Importance of Myopia for lacemaking

2022-04-01 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Devon and other Arachnids,

Firstly apologies for not cutting Devon's message or all the Arachne info, but
I am on my phone and do not know how to do that.

I had cataracts removed in both eyes about 2.5 years ago. I opted to get
the best lenses I could which were expensive but amazing. They cover the
distances from middle-near to distant. I have myopia like Devon and had worn
either glasses or contact lenses from the age of eight.

One eye was done on the Thursday of the first week and the second 8 days
later. It was wonderful as for the first time since I was 8 Icould see without
glasses or contact lenses. I found I could do most laces, except for the very
finest. Therefore, I had some lenses made for an frame I already had, by the
optician just for that fine work. So far it has served me well, though I must
say that I am thinking of having some glasses made for the really far distance
(for wild life observation).

I would say go for the best and most up to date multi-focal lenses you can
afford, especially ones that correct the astygmatism as well as I did. If you
wish to retain the advantage of myopia (which would certainly help with lace
making) opt for the mid- to far distance lenses.

Hope that your operations go as well as mine did! I have not looked back since
then.

Happy lace making,

Joepie, in East Sussex, UK where we had snow and hail today.

Gentle Spiders,

I have been told that I should have cataract surgery. There are many options
in cataract surgery and I don’t know that I understand them all. According
to the doctor, I can have the inexpensive and largely insurance subsidized
surgery in which I will have “basic” lenses implanted in my eye. (These
are eerily called IOLs) The basic should return my eye to where it was
pre-cataract. The alternative costs more, but would involve implanting a
highly specialized lens in my eye that would address my astigmatism and it
might even be possible to go glasses free afterward as I have not done since
age 7. <,...>

I now think the problem was the cataracts. If my vision were returned to what
it was before (basic lenses) I would be happy to have my same close vision
that I am used to. My lifestyle wouldn’t change. I would still wear startling
red glasses as part of my style identity.

I mentioned this to the doctor and he said that in the more expensive,
multi-focus lenses he could put the focus anywhere I wanted, and I could have
it rather close up and I would still wear glasses for long distance vision.

Admittedly, I am somewhat intrigued by the idea of not feeling around for my
glasses everyday. They don’t fit too well over a K95 mask. So, a lens that
does well at all distances has a certain appeal. I don’t even know if I want
him to put the focus in close quarters. After all, it is supposed to be good
close-up.

The more expensive surgery also is more likely to have issues since you have
to seat the lens in exactly the correct position. However, the claim is that
it doesn’t happen that often.

In both cases the surgery takes 20 minutes.

Has anyone had cataract surgery? How has it affected your lacemaking? What
choices did you make and are you happy with them? It would really be
devastating to impair my lacemaking at this stage of my life. It is a little
too late to find a hobby that requires good distance vision.

Blindly,
Devon.

Dear Devon.

Are you sure it is really Paris ground? For me it looks like application on
mechanical tul ground.
If the qualification is beggining of 20th century and right, then they
would not be lappets anymore but bows or cravattes for the throad.
I myself have some lappets in my collection and the older ones (17th and
18th century- except the ones belonging to the times of Louis XV, a
diffeerent stile-) are not application works.

Also, thank you very much for all the work you have put in and for sharing

RE: [lace] Working with black thread [was "Thread"]

2018-09-04 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

I believe that some black lace was made with white thread and dyed black and
some made with black thread. If you have some old pieces of black lace you do
not mind unpicking you can see for yourselves. Lace dyed after it is made will
be very slightly lighter inside the crossings and twists where the dye has not
penetrated as deeply. Lace made with black threads will be darker inside the
crossings and twists as it will not have faded as much as the outside of the
threads.

Joepie in East Sussex, where Autumn is trying to creep in.

From: Diana Smith

Like Alex I’ve always understood that on the whole black lace produced in the
English east Midlands was worked with white thread which was later dyed.
On the other hand I have old Beds lace prickings on grey card which I believe
were used for work with black thread.

It means very gently stroking the bobbins to tension them.?? Best used with
fine thread. Beginners are used to giving the "Torchon tug" because they
generally start out with heavier thread and need to pull harder to get nice
tension.?? Then they find themselves breaking threads when they move to
smaller stuff.
I think Christine Springett originated the term.

RE: [lace] Making lace before diagrams

2018-05-21 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

Much the same for me as for Sue. We also had to draw out, prick and mark out
our prickings before we were to wind the bobbins. However, it does take longer
and I find that especially younger lacemakers have neither the time nor the
inclination to learn/work this way. I must say that I prefer making lace to
making prickings, but it does teach one to be able to make decision and work
independently.

Happy lace making,

Joepie.

From: Sue Babbs

When I learned in England (1988 onwards), you were given the pricking, the
training to interpret the pricking, and if you were lucky sight of the
finished lace. The main advantage of this is that you are not dependent on
diagrams (and not constantly looking from lace to diagram) and you learn to
make your own decisions.

RE: [lace] Finger looping

2018-04-06 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

These braids on the indulgences (which were frequently sold by -sometimes
spurious- Pardoners to raise funds for the church), could be finger woven or
card woven. Finger-weaving is a form of plaiting with loops on the fingers
with which one can get different and pretty patterns. With the card- and inkle
loom weaving the warp forms the visible pattern hence the pattern (the
boat-shaped visible bits of the thread at the surface) lays along the length
of the braid as can be seen in the photographs. With a loom woven braid the
pattern lie across the braid.

H Bev,
Slentre braid sounds exactly like the 5 loop braid which was the first
finger-looped braid I learned.
Did you know that by picking up the loop that is transferred from one hand
to the other in different ways - eg by changing whether you catch the top
or the bottom thread of the loop - you can get different shaped braids?

I'm not sure about Slentre Braid being a precursor to bobbin lace but I
would suggest it is the same family.

Hi fellow Arachnids,

For white (powder coated) metal rings I use the rings for lamp-shades. Many
paper/parchment lampshades utilise a wire ring at the top and bottom. These
are freely availablein several sizes in craftshops as well as on the internet
(Amazon to name but one) I have just checked, Amazon has epoxy coated white
rings the 40 cm ones are around £16 to 17 for 5 and 30 cm about £11 for 5 and
15 cm @ £8 for 5 rings. “Dreamcatcher rings” will also get you there.

[lace] Lacis thread

2017-12-16 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

For netting I tend to use DMC Cordonnet anything from 40 to 100 depending on
the size of mesh-stick (the stick used for measuring the holes) used . A
little experimenting with different mesh-sticks will soon give you the result
you want - just watch the balance between the thickness of the thread and the
size of your mesh-. Use a slightly thicker and softer thread to work the
fillings ie DMC Mouline or one of the thinner knitting cottons (I like the
soft cotton used for baby clothes) or bamboo yarn.

Confusingly the holes in your netting AND the measuring sticks are both called
meshes so I try to remember to call the measuring sticks the mesh-stick ;-).

Happy lace making.

The question of why the footside of yardage lace is either on the right

come up regularly over the years and no-one seems to have a definitive answer
other than the Brits do everything the other way around from their

I have a personal theory, so I take full blame if I am proved wrong. When I
first learned to make bobbin lace in England in the late 1970's, photocopy

So my theory is that when the Mechlin and Lille lacemakers fled to England ,
they either took rubbings of their prickings or allowed rubbings to be taken
from their prickings in their new country and the quickest and easiest way to
make up these designs was to change the side of the footside.

I hope that this makes sense and if anyone has problems with my theory I am

RE: [lace] Re: hint

2017-12-11 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi,

You are so right Jane,

  1. I would NEVER use elastic bands on my bobbins or other wooden objects
(bad experience many years ago). It seems that the rubber and wood react
together and the rubber rots even quicker. Tie a piece of thread around the
bobbins to be marked (with a loop knot for quick removal). This can be used on
continentals as well. If safety pins are used make sure they are stainless or
you might get rust marks.

  1. Nor should one leave brass pins in a pillow for too long -especially not
in one of the old fashioned straw pillows. You may end up with tiny rings of
verdigris in your lace (another bad experience).

  1. Lastly, If you are using a photocopied pattern, don’t get is wet as many
of the inks are water soluble and can leach into the lace. It takes a lot of
time, many cotton buds and lots of demineralised water to get it out again.

All the best,

Joepie

From: Jane

Hi, I feel I should post a warning.

Small elastic bands work very well to keep two bobbins together.

But, I'm a slow worker and my large Bucks Point piece took a year to
make. During that time the rubber bands perished and stuck to the wood
leaving blue or black coloured rings on the bobbin shanks.

I found safety pins through the spangles worked much better for me -
obviously a useless suggestion for continentals!

Maybe if you're a fast worker or in a different climate its not a
problem, but just thought I should mention it.

Best wishes,
Jane

Hi,

I am with Annelore here. If you work over the half block to place your corner
in the right place you are still using it as a spacer, not just to keep your
lace at the right distance from you, but also to work the lace in the right
position over the spacer. I have even got full width but only quarter length
blocks (12” x 3”) for my large 12” (32 cm) blocks pillow to move the lace only
a little OR to work over it to place the next corner in the right place on the
12 x 12” block for turning. Very useful as corners are seldom exactly where
you’d like them to be.

I don't know where you are, but Holly Van Sciver in the US carries it. (

For lace crowns and tiaras one can buy relatively cheap rings in various sizes
made for lampshades in craft and hobby-shops. They are frequently painted but
I would always cover it with narrow bias ribbon, 1. To make it easier to sew
anything -in this case a crown- onto it, 2. To make it more comfortable to

wonderful job in the previous years I will need to withdraw from Lin’s list.
Sorry about the misunderstanding. I thought this was the normal exchange list
and that there was a problem about Janet running it. My apologies for not
realising that this was a different list.

Wow, what a wonderful response so far with only two days yet to join in the
fun. I wish to thank those who have been responsive so far for your
participation. I hope more of you will join in the fun. There is nothing
like the sense of accomplishment for making a project complete. The card
exchange includes treasures to bring smiles to all who hang and/or fondly
admire them and share the pleasure of a gift from afar with those near.

If you are curious, you can go to:
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/index.html (the
home page),

http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2015/index.html (for the card exchange),
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2015bookmarks/index.html or

 to view previous
years' exchanges. From any of these links, you can browse back to 2006 and
all the exchanges hosted during that time. There are many more browsing
opportunities for ideas and/or just to drool and get inspired. Jenny
graciously devotes her time and energy to allowing all of us to see what,
as a group, we accomplish. If you have not signed up yet, please consider
joining in the fun.

As a reminder, this year the schedule will go like this:

August 14-

 September 7 Sign Ups

September 10 Exchange partner assignments to be made and
emailed out

December 1All cards hopefully will be in the mail

Same rules apply as the previous bookmark and card exchanges: send in
name, snail mail address, email address, how many card(s) you wish to make
and any geographical preferences to me at *linhud...@gmail.com
*. After making your card(s) please take a picture
and email directly to Jenny Brandis (je...@brandis.com.au) who once again
is a dear heart and will be posting all on her web site or to me (
linhud...@gmail.com). If you wonder if your partner was able to send in a
photo of her bookmark to you, just send one upon receipt and Jenny will
make sure everyone is represented in the best light.

If members of your lace group(s) or lacing friends wish to participate,
they only need to be a member of Arachne and can sign up by emailing:
majord...@arachne.com requesting to be included in the membership. Please
let them know they can have daily emails, the Digest and/or the Chat emails
sent to them. Both the Digest and Chat come sporadically in groupings.
The Digest is for lace related topics and the Chat will cover non-lace
related topics and will be little items of interest to share with the
group. Membership is free and open to all lacemakers..

If you have any questions or preferences, please feel free to email me
linhud...@gmail.com.

This is just too much fun for one person to make by themselves. Come take
a bit of it for yourself. Happy lacemaking.

Edged with lace that's made by hand
For the happy bride to carry
When she gets her wedding band.

But when the day is over,
Wash and fold with care
It can become a pretty bonnet
For a new born babe to wear.

Just turn one edge over
And gather fold so neat
Some ribbons on two corners
And the bonnet is complete

Hi fellow Arachnids,

If the lace has ever been starched in the past these ‘age spots’ could be from
weevil poo from the weevils attracted to the starch. They are very difficult
to get rid of (the spots, not the weevils which get killed when the lace is
washed. Look through the Arachne Archives for washing instructions. These have
been discussed a number of times.

The u and e look fine at my end, but I’m also using Mail on a Mac. Bev has
straightened me out about the character viewer; for anybody else who has a Mac
and didn’t know it was there, it’s under Edit in Mail (and in the Finder, too)
but it isn’t called Character Viewer - it’s called “Emojis and Symbols” There
are hundreds of them, and I had to scroll down quite a ways to find the little
heart. I was searching for it using the alternate characters on the keyboard
(hold down Option or Shift+Option while typing the keyboard characters), which
is mostly alphabetic things like vowels with accents, plus financial symbols
like the euro sign and the pound sign.

[lace] Bookmarks

Hi Fellow Arachnids,

Today I received a lovely Torchon bookmark from Carole Attarde Montalto as

former for the thoughts and work that had gone into it and the latter as I had
actually been in the building depicted, a few years (too many) back when on

I am afraid my bookmark to her only just slid in under the wire as it was

Hi fellow Arachnids,

Although I agree with Sally on several points, I.e. that Mary Niven did a
wonderful job of designing as well as providing us with a useful book at a time
when there were not as many books available as there are now. Also, that we
should always acknowledge designers and makers by name. However, this is a
photo on the net and not in the book near the pricking and working diagram
where it needs to be. I think it is the only pattern in the book that lacks a
photo. Otherwise the book is an excellent resource for patterns in Flanders

possible within the constraints of the book format.

Dear lacers,

edging with cats. One person said there was a working diagram but no photo.

There is a photo of this, worked by the late Bart Elwell of Tulsa,
Oklahoma, here:

As a side note, let me say I am grateful to Mary Niven, the designer, for
calling me out (scolding me gently) when I, as the webmaster for the above
website, failed initially to label the photo with the name of the pattern
designer. All of us who post photos in public places should try to credit
the pattern designers when possible. (Speaking to self!)

I hope the photo will help those who want to make this pretty edging!

RE: [lace] Flanders or Binche cat pattern

Hi Sherri andFellow Arachnids,

The book it is from is Flanders Lace by Mary Niven. (Publisher, Dryads Press
Ltd), ISBN 0-85219-691-1.

It is the only pattern in the book that has a working diagram but no
photograph. I worked the cats about 20 years ago and it is not an easy pattern.
If you have done a fair amount of Flanders then give it a whirl, but if you
have not done much Flanders try something a little easier first. The tensioning
requires great care (do not over-tension) especially in the large areas of
cloth stitch in the cats themselves.

Hope that helps.

Hi Sue and Fellow Arachnids,

Thank you very much for sharing your lovely work with us. The Christmas comet
is beautiful as are the other pieces on your photo album and I so agree with
you about colours in the dark ages. Bright colours were difficult to achieve
and would only be worn by the rich. Not only that, the washing methods used
would soon bash the colours out of the clothes as well as the fact that poor
people would either have to make what they wore or had their clothes second
hand if they were lucky (more likely 5th or 6th hand if they were very poor).

I would also like to thank Clay and Janice for hosting the site and keeping it

Hi fellow Arachnids,

Please be VERY careful with Araldite as there are people allergic (including
me and my son)to this. Both the skin and the lungs could suffer even in a
well-ventilated room. However, If you can take the Araldite, putting the bead
in some plasticine with the shaft pointing up would do it.

Hi,

You have to get organised as the whole of the lace collection of the V has
been moved to another large house in or near London. I cannot remember the
name of it, but you have to contact the V to gain access anyway so you can
liaise with them.

For people living in the UK (or anyone else who can get it on their computer)
go to BBC iPlayer;- Olympic Closing Ceremony. It is about 1 hour 14 mins into

Well worth having a second or third look. I think that the dancers are also

RE: [lace] Back stitching with sewings

2016-08-19 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

One can also use CTCTC to create a turn stitch (also called; back stitch or
lock stitch). It does mean that you change one of your weavers so take care if
using weavers (workers) of a different colour. You probably need to try this a
couple of times to get the tension right (beginners with this stitch sometimes
need to set a support pin to this to keep it in place, but it is better
without).

RE: [lace] Sewing Out

2016-08-15 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

Any glue /head cement (whatever that is) or other chemical compounds should
not be used on lace that you want to treasure for a long time. It will stain
your lace The tiniest bit of a glue such as Fray Check picked up on the end of
a pin might just be used on the knots of lace which will be used and washed
regularly (such as lace on a T-shirt).

Please try to learn to knot off properly and where necessary and it is at all
possible sew the threads back into the lace.

In very fine laces the threads from bobbins taken out in densely worked areas
can frequently be just thrown out and later cut close without even knotting
it.

Hello Dan and everyone

I'd say give it a try! There are water-based as well as the lacquer-based
head cements, yes?
Ether way, I don't think very much is needed to secure the thread end, the
tiniest of dabs, and shouldn't affect the rest of the lace.

Other items used in fly-tying and -fishing that are handy for lacemaking
include -
- hackle pliers to grab a very short thread end, such as when a bobbin
thread breaks and we need to tie in a new thread
- leader line for an excellent reusable magic thread,a sewing out aid in
itself
- the fly tying vice for a third hand when required
- monofilament instead of wire for spangling
and
- I like the tools for dealing with split rings when making markers for
knitting

This just might be the solution (pun intended) to the joins coming apart in
a large lace ornament I made.
off to raid someone's fly-tying kit (again)

Why not use head cement after tying the knot?

I must tell someone about this. I had a visit this afternoon from the
tiniest spider I've ever seen--her body is the size of the head of a lace
pin (not a glass-headed pin but a regular lace pin), She walked all over
the lace I was working on, climbing up individual pins and weaving through
the forest of pins. She even spun a tiny web between a pair of pins farther
apart than the rest, out by themselves because I'd already removed the pins
around them. I couldn't see the web but I could tell it was there because
she'd walk from one of the pins to other through thin air between them.
After about a hour of keeping me company while I continued to make lace,
she started for the edge of the pillow, so I had her walk up on my
fingernail and transferred her to a windowsill.

I think I was visited by Arachne herself and I shall have luck on that
pillow!

A mammoth project and I admire you for it. However, do you think you are doing

You are obviously an accomplished lacemaker already. What is the usual type of

Dear Arachnids,

I was silent reader of this community for quite a long time but I finally
decided to introduce myself and share my project.

My name is Olga and I am making lace for 7 years now. Initially I studied
Russian lacemaking and work on a bolster pillow. But lace world is much
bigger. There are so many inspiring works and techniques, various books and
workshops. The only limit is time you can devote to it. So I have decided
to put myself a challenge to motivate to use the books I have and to study
new lacemaking techniques. Every month I study one technique and make a
sample lace. I call this project #bobbinlace12monthschallenge.

The progress of making lace I document in Instagram on daily basis:
https://www.instagram.com/eolgerin

My plans, results and technique notes I document in the blog:
http://eolgerin.blogspot.nl/search/label/BobbinLace12monthsChallenge/

The project was started in January 2016. So far it goes on successfully and
I have learned following techniques:
Milanese
Flanders
Lepoglava
Austria
Slovenian and Idria

If you are interested in the project, you are welcome to join in Instagram
or Blogger.
I would very much appreciate your feedback!

Best regards,
Olga

Hi all,

The year 2014, I was fortunate to attend a workshop on design and technique
applied to creation of lace for clothing, carried out by Jana Novak in The
Catalonian Lace Ass. -ACP-, in Barcelona. She then, encouraged all of us to
design our own pieces and gave us the opportunity to participate in the
Fashion Show that she had to organize within the Knipling’s Festival in
Tonder 2016.

As a result, I have contributed to the Fashion Show with four pieces: a
shawl, two tops, and one vest. A fellow Spanish lacemaker, Encarna
Gonzalez, has also sent a vest and a “poncho”.

I have enjoyed a lot designing and making the pieces and I have been lucky
enough to assist to the Festival, so I feel very happy. I have put on my
web a report of the trip with two slide shows, one on the Fashion Show and
another on a fantastic exhibition of Vologda laces and a short video on the
Spanish participation that maybe would you like to see.

Hi Jane and other Arachnids,

Just to add to my rather short and hurried note I wrote just now rather in
anger. Sorry about that because I did say ‘share’ when I should have said
‘buy cooperatively’ or something similar.

If I did not get together with my best friend to subscribe to these lace
magazines I would only able to afford two or three which would mean that three
or four groups/magazines would miss out as my friend is in her eighties and
could not be bothered with the hassle of keeping the subscriptions up.
However, because I organise the magazines and subs she only has to pay her
share (or portion if you prefer). So rather than slating me for ‘sharing’
magazines, one should ask about the circumstances before commenting and
certainly not apportion blame.

By the way, The Lace Guild is the only group where she has a separate
subscription which I organise for her so we always have two “Lace”
magazines.

Not only that, I always recommend that my students join the Lace Guild and
several have done so.

Lastly, The Lace Circle, which I also belonged to for many years did not close
because people shared their magazine (“The Lacemaker”) but because no
members came forward to take over the running of the group (at that time I was
too busy and too far away to be of any use to them).

Unfortunately Joepie is not the only one who shares her magazines with other

producing the magazines, to the extent that they have to increase their
subscription rates (as The Lace Guild are hoping to get members' approval for
at their AGM on Sunday) which has a knock on effect of discouraging renewal -
and could very well put their survival at risk. Can I make the same plea as
has been made many times before, and ask you to stop sharing your magazines
before more lace organisations have to close as the Circle did?

I was also concerned that because I can't attend the AGM and asked for a proxy

articles, book reviews, patterns & news from the world of lace. The Lace
Express with patterns and eye candy but no articles at all. Vuelta y Cruz
which is brilliant as it helps my Spanish study as it is written in Spanish
and English. This has articles on lace, patterns as well as series of lessons
for a particular type of lace. And lastly but not least OIDFA which lacks the

Why I Like to Make Lace
By Noelene Lafferty

In today's busy world
Where life is one rush
And it seems to me speed is the norm -
When people can't stop
To hear a bird sing
Or thrill to a thundery storm -

In a quiet little nook
Just my own little space
I like to make time that's just mine -
With pillow and thread
And pattern all pricked
And bobbins all neatly in line.

There's something so good
To place thread over thread
And slowly see lines making sense
To cross and to twist
And to put up a pin
And forget all about feeling tense.

So when pressure is on
I retire from the world
Leaving troubles behind in my wake
To create something of beauty
So calming and quiet
And marvel at what I can make.

RE: [lace] Why I Like to Make Lace

2015-11-22 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi fellow Arachnids,

Whoa! Why have I not received this poem? I love Noelene’s poems and so do my
students. I have noticed I do not receive all communications from Arachne at
present. My system (Windows 10) runs Windows Outlook, my provider is BT and
the messages are not in my junk-folder. Does anybody know what is happening?

Happy lace making.

RE: [lace] tape lace distinguishing features

2015-11-17 Thread J-D Hammett
Princes lace also uses leaf-shaped tapes (cut as necessary into separate
leaves) and other tapes which have shape woven in ie. Shell/fan shapes on the
edge of a tape. I think the others use only straight tapes. It tends to have
fewer needle-lace fillings although they are worked in relatively fine
thread.

Luxieul lace is the name I could not remember earlier today. It is very
similar to Branscombe, but lacks the Branscombe edge picots.

The needle-fillings in Battenberg are usually very simple and made with coarse
thread.

Hope this helps as well.

Happy lace making,

Joepie

Borris Lace and Branscombe lace both use a machine made straight tape. Like
a tape made on the straight with whole or cloth stitch.
Battenberg lace uses Battenberg tape which is courser and made on the cross
grain so that it can be drawn up to fit the design curves by pulling the
gathering thread that runs along the edge of the tape. Princess tapes can
also be gathered up in this way.
Borris and Branscombe tapes do not gather and must be whipped along the edge
to gather up. Branscombe tape is all mounted and whipped to lie flat before
working the fillings. Borris tape is drawn up while working the fillings.

Hope this helps with understanding. Please ask questions if I have not
adequately explained it.

Best wishes

What are the distinguishing features of Borris lace, Branscombe, Battenberg
and princesse?  Battenberg is usually considered quite crude. Are there
other styles of mixed tape lace that I haven't mentioned?

I agree with Jane Partridge. The picots look right as well. A similar lace
constructed of machine-made tapes with needle-lace fillings was made in
France, but their picots were different.

I'm thinking it could be Branscombe, although the tape is fairly wide, it
looks right and the needlelace fillings look intricate enough and certainly
include some of the 'traditional' ones.

Re: [lace] decals for bobbins

2015-09-18 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Sharon and fellow Arachnids,

Some time ago I did try out some decals on cheap beginners’ bobbins. I
varnished the bobbins first (2 layers) applied the decals and then varnished
again (2 layers when I did it first 3 layers later) The varnish yellowed the
decals slightly, but it did protect them. I used clear, water-based yacht
varnish and used a satin finish for the last layer as I did not like the feel
nor the sheen of the gloss varnish.

Hope that helps.

Happy lace making.

Rooting through my late Father’s hobby supplies I came across a Testors kit
for making custom decals for models. It occurred to me that would be rather
handy if you wanted to produce detailed motifs for bobbins. <……>

Did you need to start with a glossy
finish (you do with model kits in order for the decal to adhere properly).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sharon

Re: [lace] Bobbin storage

2015-06-27 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Fellow Arachnids,

My bobbins are mainly stored in bobbin bags which are flat and have narrow
sections that take a pair of bobbins. Each bag which is slightly padded
contains about forty or so pairs and the bags can be stored on top of one
another. They are easy to carry and you can also use them for wound bobbins to
take with you. They are sorted by type. If wound bobbins are stored I leave the
thread label (or the reel/tube if not too thick) in the bag with the bobbins.

I also have a good store of wooden cigar boxes -given to me some time ago by a
smoker- which have been cleaned thoroughly and well-aired to get rid of the
smell. On the end panel is marked which type of bobbins they contain. Again,
they stack and being about the right length for bobbins -about 6 x 5 x 5 inches
(15 x 12.5 x 12.5 cms) they contain many bobbins.

Mind you, if I were to complete the projects in progress all at the same time I
might be in trouble ;-)

Happy lace making,

Joepie in Beautiful East Sussex, UK where the sun is shining and it is warm!! I
love it.

I am wondering how you store your bobbins when they are not in use? Are you
storing English Midlands or Continentals?

Hi all,

I finally got to the halfway point with my Wisteria Edging.

It is a pattern which was adapted by Christine Springett, and I started it
on a course with her in May 2013.

Did a bit then gave up.

Earlier this year I decided to have another go, and I am now hooked.

It is a good learning curve if you want to do Bedfordshire lace.

I have uploaded a picture to my album on Flickr.

[lace] Bookmark- plastic film

2015-06-09 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Fellow Arachnids,

A few days ago I received a beautiful bookmark in Romanian point from Sue
Turnbull. Thank you very much indeed Sue I am delighted with it and hope Sue
likes the bookmark I sent her yesterday as much. I was later than I had hoped
with this as time at present seems to be in very short supply -or is it that as
one grows older time seems to go quicker and quicker ;-).

As to using plastic film or not on the patterns; I use it as I have had
problems with both so-called permanent markers as well as printed patterns in
the past. The only safe way is to use Indian ink for marking -I do this on lace
card for patterns to be used several times- or cover with plastic film. Soft
blue, grey, peach, green, mid-blue or clear plastic film depending on what I am
doing and the base colour of the paper, but always matt.

The bookmark I did for Sue was done on 2 mm graph paper over a piece of data
card covered by mid-blue film and vaguely lined out to show where I wanted
elements to go as it was a ‘one off’ piece.

Again my thanks to Sue.

Happy lace making to all.
