Re: [lace] Left handed tricks?

2020-03-02 Thread Ursula Mesnaric
Hello

I most time only read your mails, because of my English is noch the best.

I want to tell you another trick I used to learn left handed students
all of my textil techniques:

I`m sitting on a stool and have mirror in my lap, size about 20 x 30 cm
(8 x 12 inch).
I work in front of the mirror, so I look at my work from the right side,
as I would normally work.

My student is sitting vice versa of me, looking *in the mirror* (not on
the left side of my work).
She or he will see me working as I would be a left handed.

I developed this, when my left handed son was a small child and wants to
learn knitting and crochet.

This way I teached knitting, hand sewing, knotting, braiding, winding
bobbins, every technique.
In my classes most time about 1/3 to 1/2 of the students were left handed.
And the method works.

I hope, my explanations are clear enough, that you can understand what I
mean.

best regards, Ursula
from Germany, where is a very sunny day.

2020-02-28 Thread Elizabeth Pass
The talk of problem hitches, left-handed winding, anti-clockwise etc. reminds
me of the time that I used teach children on Saturday mornings. (I did it for
sixteen and a half years). One girl had great trouble winding clockwise, so I
suggested that she look at the head of the bobbin and imagine that it was a
clock face, then check with the electric wall clock. The second hand would
show the direction to wind the thread. This proved to be a success - no more
anti-clockwise and the hitch stayed put. One day the hitch wouldn't stay, and
the bobbin thread kept lengthening, the bobbin had been wound anti-clockwise.
I asked, "Did you look at the clock?" "Yes," she answered. I looked at the
clock. It was going backwards!

I’ve only just caught up with this conversation but if you like diagrams of
hitches done right- and left-handed I have some on my website a

and also an explanation of why it’s a good idea to wind the thread on the
bobbin by turning the bobbin rather than wrapping the thread around the bobbin

I have also noticed that students interpret "clockwise" and
"counter-clockwise" differently when they are winding, so I've stopped
explaining things that way. It's funny how trying to be more clear can
complicate things further sometimes!

Thank you all again. I hope that my left-handed students will all benefit
from your advice!

Re: [lace] Left handed tricks?

2020-02-26 Thread Adele Shaak
Just to add a fun little wrinkle - something I didn’t know until last year was
that whether something is clockwise or counter-clockwise depends entirely on
your vantage point. Take a bobbin and start winding thread on clockwise as
you’re looking at the head of the bobbin. Then continue the same winding, but
look at the thread from the bottom of the bobbin - you are winding
counter-clockwise.

Which might explain why so many people have trouble when they’re told to wind
clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Whichever way you’re winding, hold the bobbin horizontally. If you’re
left-handed, you’ll be holding the bobbin with your right hand, and the head of
the bobbin will point to the left.

Extend the forefinger of the hand that is holding the bobbin, so it lies along
the thread shank, but not touching it. Now: If you are left-handed and winding
clockwise as you look down on the bobbin head, the thread goes over the top of
the bobbin, towards you, and back away underneath the bobbin, then continue
winding the thread up between the finger and the bobbin, then pull the thread
away from you, around your finger, back up between the bobbin and your finger,
and over the shank towards you, making a figure 8. Put the tip of your finger
over the head of the bobbin and move the hitch down onto the bobbin.

If you are a leftie winding counter-clockwise as you look down on the head of
the bobbin, extend the finger of your right hand (which is holding the bobbin)
as before. The thread will come under the bobbin shank towards you, and up and
over the shank, heading away from you. Wind the thread down between the bobbin
and your finger and then wrap around your finger from bottom, up the back of
your finger, and coming over the top towards you and down between the bobbin
and your finger. Tip the finger over the head of the bobbin and move the hitch.

Either way, you make a Figure 8 with the thread. And, of course, it also works
for right-handers. Just remember to make the figure 8 and you won’t go wrong.

Hope this helps.

Re: [lace] Left handed tricks?

2020-02-26 Thread Alice Howell
When the student is holding the bobbin and winding the thread on, is the
thread winding clockwise or counterclockwise?
Actually, I think I can explain a hitch so it works either way with either
hand.

When the bobbin is wound, lay the thumb along side the thread on the bobbin.
Continue winding the thread so it goes around the thumb once.  Tip the thumb
so it touches the top of the bobbin.  Slide the thread off the thumb and down
on the bobbin.  You have your hitch.
As long as the thread continues it's same winding direction around the thumb,
the tipped-over loop should form a hitch that works no matter which hand is
winding or which direction the bobbin is rotating.

Re: [lace] Left handed tricks?

2020-02-26 Thread Beth Harpell
Hi Elena,

Letslace has a video for winding on in the left-handed manner that shows her
making a double hitch. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FxVBSv5RhNo

I do it a different way. When I was just beginning, neither my teacher, nor I
realized I was winding on differently than she was, so I was winding
left-handed, but hitching right-handed. I went to a convention class and the
teacher saw the issue immediately. She told me to hold the bobbin in my right
hand with the thread hanging off to the left, and then with my left hand palm
up, do a motion as if I’m telling a bad little boy to “come here”. Catch
the thread in the “crook” of that finger, and then just twist that hand in
a clockwise direction so the back of the hand is then up and facing the
ceiling. It creates a loop in the thread, which you put the head of the bobbin
into from “behind” or from the “far side”. If you’ve done it
correctly, there should be a thread in a U-shape with thread coming out from
under it.

Hopefully this helps. I find that the left-handed “come here little boy”
visual is very helpful.
