Re: [lace] Testing whether Italics will process on Arachne's Old Server
Dear Spiders, The appearance of extended ASCII characters (the proper term for these unusual characters) has nothing to do with the age of Arachne's server at panix.com. Servers and software ARE updated, swapped out for newer models, and patched. Just because you have been on Arachne for 20+ years does not mean that the hardware and majordomo have not changed! :-) If you want to know more, this Wikipedia article explains it well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_ASCII Here's another: http://developer.telemessage.com/faq/how-do-i-encode-non-ascii-characters-in-an-email-subject-line Since this discussion is not lace-related, I suggest that it be moved either to lace chat or to private emails. Thank-you, Avital Arachne Moderator P.S. Please try to trim quoted posts. Everyone forgets from time to time (I forgot when I posted about Burano and lace), but I'm still here, keeping an eye on the list traffic and sending gentle reminders when I see lots of in the digest. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. The ü and é came through fine on my Windows 10. I hope mine do as well. I will also try for å and ø using a program called Character Map. This is somewhat cumbersome to use, but at least it gets accents etc. In the right shape. Now for lace:- Does anyone know of a lace pattern of an Bluebell? Joepie, UK. Bev has straightened me out about the character viewer; for anybody else who has a Mac and didnt know it was there, its under Edit in Mail (and in the Finder, too) but it isnt called Character Viewer - its called Emojis and Symbols There are hundreds of them, and I had to scroll down quite a ways to find the little heart. I was searching for it using the alternate characters on the keyboard (hold down Option or Shift+Option while typing the keyboard characters), which is mostly alphabetic things like vowels with accents, plus financial symbols like the euro sign and the pound sign. On your Mac, if you go to the system preferences and choose âKeyboardâ, you can check the box that says âshow keyboard and emoji viewers in menu barâ. This puts a little icon in the menu bar that allows you to pull up the two viewers from the desktop⦠the Emoji viewer is the same one you get from the Mail program, but they Keyboard viewer gives you a diagram of the keyboard layout. If you then press things like the âcommandâ, âshiftâ, or âoptionâ keys with the keyboard viewer open it will show you what symbols you have available. The alt codes worked but the asterisks, and underline didnât. Iâm in UK using Mail on a Mac. Does the ü in Gütermann and the é in Perlé translate correctly? Re: [lace] Testing whether Italics will process on Arachne's Old Server
Hello again Jeri and everyone First, ditto Shirley T. ! The arachne list is an ongoing delight. Jeri, your underline, bold and italic won't be seen in any country. It isn't the server, it is the software. Our set-up permits punctuation but not formatting such as bold, italic and underlining. A way to indicate them in plain text is as follows: An asterisk at either end of text is *italics*. Two asterisks at either end, **bold** An underscore at either end, _underline_ Some online chat-rooms will convert the * ** and _ to the real thing. Another test: I'm wondering, if I use alt-codes, if other non-English letters show up, such as the c in Alençon, the o of Tønder, the u in Cantù If not, I'm sorry about the garble... RE: [lace] Testing whether Italics will process on Arachne's Old Server
Your test here in Australia came through as with others, Jeri. Punctuation but no italics, or bold, or underline. I would welcome a change to another email exchange base, as messages from some members of Arachne get truncated as soon as they use an unusual character like an apostrophe, and I have to go to our archive to read the whole message. I run a small email chat group, just for Australian lacemakers, through Google Groups which is free, has no ads, does not generate any spam, and allows the inclusion of formatted text but I don't believe it would be possible to mass transfer 1,000 plus new members on to it. And it does not offer any support (being free), so there is no way I can enquire about this. Hello Catherine, Jeri, and everyone The mail list software will only show as plain, any formatted text (bold, italics, etc.) . See how it looks at the mail archive: https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/msg50834.html Idea: write the review on a blog for instance, to get the desired text effects, and post the link to us on arachne.
