You've hit the nail on the head. I remember going to a play in London, years ago. The two lead parts were supposed to be Canadians and they both spoke with U.S. Mid-Western accents, which you'd never hear here. It bothered me so much that I almost walked out at the intermission, but I wanted to see how the play ended.


Just as we all have accents, we all live in societies/countries with a class system. It's just more subtle in some countries than in others. Way back in the dark ages (1960s), when I was at university, I took a sociology course entitled 'Class and caste in North America'. It was fascinating.
