Subject: [lace-chat] Happy Trafalgar Day!

At last England is celebrating Trafalgar Day today - the 200th anniversary
of the battle of Trafalgar when we wupped the French and Spanish and Admiral
Lord Nelson died.

The famous signal in flags "England expects every man to do his duty" has
already been hoisted on HMS Victory in Portsmouth this morning and there are
various events, particularly in the Portsmouth area, throughout the day.
Around 1,000 beacons being lit around the country this evening, that being
the method of signalling that something notable had happened before the days
of easy communication.
...
So happy Trafalgar Day to anyione who considers themselves English.

Yesterday, we listened to live broadcasts on National Radio from Nelson, New Zealand, where celebrations for Trafalgar Day have been going on for a week, now. A highlight of the broadcast was the peal of bells from Nelson Cathedral, which began a peal to be carried on from bell-towers around the world that will culminate in Trafalgar Square, London.

A new museum is opening today, and evidently there are items on display that are linked with Lord Nelson, and Emma Hamilton. One of Lord Nelson's descendants is visiting the city, and was interviewed on the radio.

Some of Nelson's streets are named for names and places connected with Lord Nelson, and the famous battle. Trafalgar Street is the main street, leading up to Trafalgar Square, and the Cathedral.
