Last Saturday I had two pieces of lace purchased from an online charity event.  Both went to appreciative people so I didn't mind that the prices were not as high as they should have been for the work involved, raised $100 for abused children and battered women.  Gets them out of my home and may be worn or admired by others.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Happy Anniversary
Hi Shelagh, I had carpal tunnel problems in both hands, and had surgery on both. The first surgery was the standard ligament release with a long incision -- it healed up tight and I occasionally have problems still in that hand, plus it was a long and painful recovery. The other wrist was done endoscopically: they made a little slit at the end of my arm and another in my palm, and inserted a tube and a tiny camera. The surgeon cut the ligament from the inside, releasing the pressure on the nerve. I had a bandaid on both little slits, a local nerve block, no tranquilizer or other anesthetic, and no pain--I drove myself home afterwards! That release has stayed released and I have no problems in that hand anymore. Moral of the story -- get a release done soon, but make sure it's endoscopic surgery. I can type or make lace for hours on end with no problem with my left wrist or hand, and minimal problems with my right (the standard surgery). (Shoulders and back are a different story!) The release makes a world of difference, but the standard one can be only partially effective. Hope this helps. Good luck to you. Re: [lace] Happy Anniversary
Hi I, too, joined Arachne many years ago. After a 15 year absence I have taken up bobbin lacemaking again. It is great fun to see so many names I remember from years ago. Everyone was very helpful and I learned a great deal from people on this list. My favourite types of bobbin lace are Torchon and Bucks, but I have also done some Honiton and Chrysanthum. Next I want to try Idrija and Milanese. Unfortunately I, too, have developed a pinched nerve or Carpal Tunnel syndrome in both my wrists so I now limit lacemaking to 15 minutes at a time and then take a long break. Sigh! It has been a great activity to help pass time during this difficult time of lockdowns due to Covid. Happy lacemaking. Re: [lace] Happy Anniversary
I joined you all in 2005 to keep in touch with lacemakers after my lace teacher retired and neither she nor the class was replaced. I contined to learn and be inspired to carry on although I added tatting to my interests which I have been doing more of in recent years. I have ventured into Quilting last year to create special gifts for special people but have returned to working some lace right now. I got some UFO's completed ready for future brides and have had a big fight on my hands trying to relearn bucks point in order to work another horseshoe to match one worked in 2018. I think I am doing ok now and as long as I take it very slow and check often it is growing at last and I am going forwards more than going backward. I number of Arachnids have been a huge help in my years in the group and I thank them for the help, guidance and support at various times. I am currently working with some pretty numb fingers so it is a bigger challenge now, but good for the grey matter and finger dexterity to keep pushing. So Happy Anniversary to all on the list. I joined just after the first anniversary. That's when I got my computer, and the first thing I typed in was 'lace'. I learned so much from the List. I just finished a Binche project from a class I took about 15 years ago. When I pulled it off the shelf, it was 3/4 done so I've been working on it. Now I need to explore my shelves and see what else I can discover to finish next. Or check out new patterns and choose something to start. Either way, I need a project on hand on the off-chance that we get to do a demo sometime during the summer. [lace] Happy Anniversary
Over the years the question has come up as to whether other means of discussing matters may be better - some have tried ning, others yahoo groups - I seem to remember it was a yahoo group that was (or was to be) set up to discuss the details of the millenium project. It was, to me at least, always too much bother going to find or join other sites so I stuck with Arachne. The main 'problem' with changing to another 'group' was that there were always a number who didn't like whatever group it was for whatever reason - would never use yahoo, facebook, etc. So we stayed with Arachne which continues to serve its purpose well; we've surmounted problems like how to view photos (even when the photo site we were using went down permanently). It may be a little slower in response, but there is always someone to answer a question, no matter how often it is asked. But then, we're lacemakers, we're used to the slower pace of life (vbg). Where facebook is concerned, I did join bobbin lacemakers for a while but left, and find lacemakers (which was set up so that any type of lace can be discussed) far more friendly and helpful. Photos are shared of latest projects, as well as the "where have I gone wrong" photos, which are helpful to beginners. The availability of easy translation has encouraged non-English speaking lacemakers to join in, something we've never quite achieved on Arachne, although the welcome has always been extended with the suggestion that there will usually be someone on the list who can translate, and we don't mind if the standard of English isn't brilliant. It's good to see so many of the 'long in the tooth' Arachnes are still with us. I joined somewhere around July 1995, about three months after it started, after it was mentioned (I think by Jean Peach) on either uk.rec.crafts or rec.crafts.textiles.needlework - it was through sites like that that I discovered that computers had uses for things not just work related! - surprisingly some of the rec.crafts groups are still going, too. Is it time to start considering whether we are going to do/have something special for our 25th anniversary in two years time? (We could set up another yahoo group and then ignore it, in good Arachne tradition - vvbg). Jane Partridge Jane Read wrote... So many years, how did that happen! Happy Anniversary, I raise my bobbins to all my fellow lacemakers :-) . In answer to Jeri's comment, I don't think there is any equivalent technology to the way Majordomo works. My understanding is that the Majordomo is part of the unix email system (and linux perhaps). All the social media stuff is quite different in concept and technology. Actually, given the length of time that Arachne has been in existence, I should think we've been 'migrated' forward a few times. We'd know nothing about it, as the tech guys transfer things from an old computer to a new one without changing anything. No-one is going to keep a server running for 25 years! Sending my Best Wishes and Anniversary greetings to all. I joined the list back in 1998, I think, having seen a piece about it in the Lace Guild magazine. I have enjoyed the discussions, raffles, exchanges and most definitely the information that has been given on the list and the camaraderie within the group. I don’t make as much lace these days as I have found lots of other crafts since moving house 4 years ago but still have work on pillows waiting for me to have the enthusiasm once again. Well, I have been with Arachne since the 1st year! Not sure which month because it was a painful year (fell off a ladder 25 feet to a cement floor in Dec 1995) I discovered bobbin lacemaking as an activity early in 1996 and was searching for a resource. Ran into Arachne, probably pretty close after its inception! So many people back then that are still loyal Arachne members! Yes, a glorious Anniversary! I am still loyal as all get out though not as active as then! Still reading posts and occasionally piping up! Thanks for the anniversary heads up David!
