[lace] anniversary.

2019-04-27 Thread Sharon Whiteley
I too found Arachne in 1996, in about August of that year. I remember
when I first discovered it. I had typed in "lace" in the browser and
was shocked to get a lot of porno web-sites :) Luckily arachne did
appear too and I've belonged ever since. It was a real thrill just to
know there was other lacer's out there, I had never met any for the
first 15 yr s. that I made lace. A year later and we moved up Island to
Courtenay /Comox the home of The Denman and District Lace Club. I have
often posted questions for my fellow club members over the years and
printed off tips that I thought they might find of interest. It's been
a wonderful resource and I've made a couple of good e-pals along the
way. Speaking of the Denman Club, starting on May 6th of this year we
are hosting a 3 day lace getaway to celebrate our club's 100th
anniversary :) Quite an achievement :) Sharon ..on sunny, but windy,
Vancouver Island.

[lace] anniversary

2018-04-15 Thread Rick & Sharon Whiteley
It’s hard to believe it’s 23 yrs. already :) I joined Arachne about 6
months after it’s beginning and remember when I first found it. I was very
new to the internet and I typed simply “lace” into the search engine.
That was an eye opener because most sites with the key word were about sexy
clothes and also mildly pornographic..Frederick’s of Hollywood stuff.
However Arachne did pop up too and I joined immediately. What a thrill to be
able to tap into such a valuable helpful source. Up until then I had never
met another lace maker. I was completely self taught and Arachne definitely
filled in the blanks. And yes David, I do remember Susan from Tennessee :)
What a piece of work. I think she/he has been the only person actually kicked
off Arachne. I also remember having a real chuckle over Tamara’s problem
with her ever darkening monitor :) Well, it’s been a fun 23 yrs. and I’d
like to thank everyone for all the wonderful knowledge they’ve shared over
the years. Sharon on Vancouver Island

Re: [lace] Anniversary

2018-04-12 Thread Adele Shaak
I’ve been on Arachne since 1996 - just about the beginning. I will always
remember the excitement of reading the many, many pages of messages that came
every day in my digest. So much information, and I wanted to print it all out!
I had been making lace in a vacuum - none of my friends or relatives had a
clue, so all that talk was an exotic, extraordinary experience.

I do miss the old Arachne, but that level of excitement just couldn’t continue
and it would be hard to take if it did. I understand the lure of Facebook, and
it’s a great advantage that you can upload photos together with your message.
I’ve been told Facebook is old, Twitter is getting past it, and Instagram is
the best right now, but I don’t understand how Twitter and Instagram are better
for our purposes than Facebook - or even good old Arachne. We need the ability
to write long, involved messages.

These laces show animals and people, or interpret old art masterpieces - in

Hi Lacers,

We’re still a small guild (ahem - for a while), and some of our members are not

Hi Arachnids

Transfers can be made for ironing onto fabric. Then they could be used on
cover cloths, T-shirts etc. no matter our type of lace we could use them
Again, these would be light, easy and inexpensive to post. The person having
the job of posting all these items needs to be thought of. How quick and easy
will the item be to pack. Suppliers are used to the logistics of this job. We
have had one supplier offering her services and it may be possible to others.

have a choice. With all the creative talent on this list, I am sure there

Of course - the mouse pad doesn't get seen by others so we aren't 'spreading
the word', but this is OUR anniversary and doesn't necessarily have to be
advertising as well. A mouse pad plus a design to be added to something of
our choice would be a good compromise. Not everyone uses bobbins, cover

 Hello Carolina and everyone

Thank you for reminding us of your a witch stitch @ spider!
But I had Lenka's design on file for a while then did some housecleaning -
glad that Tamara has her version.

There are a few other spider designs collected at the Lace Fairy site
although not all links still work. Jacqui Southworth made a dandy spider also
with an @ for a body, in Honiton lace.

Re: [lace] anniversary logo

2013-03-22 Thread Bev Walker
I have been looking online and do not find one yet.
This was from early in the arachne list, even before the archives.

oh yes, it was from Jacqui Southwork not Janice Blair. Thanks Bev.

I think that is a lovely design Carolina.
It is maybe a bit big to go onto a bobbin, pin, flash drive etc., but I like
it.

Re: [lace] anniversary logo

2013-03-22 Thread Liz and Ken Roberts
I like this design! It looks like it could be very versatile and it is so
lacy it is not quite as icky as a real spider! I'm not sure if as a beginner
I would be able to work it, but I think I could try, with a little help.

I am member of Arachne since year 1999 or 2000 , I do not remember exactly
ow if it was Janice Blair who made a spider that shared with the list with a
ign of @.

amara, you were speaking of this design, not from Lenka .In fact I do not
emember Lenka's.

Some 10 years ago, Lenka Suchanek (then a member of Arachne list), designed
logo for us -- a drawing of an @ sign, with a spider in its center, to be
ade in lace of one's choice. This being during the time when my lacemaking
ind was still working fine, I made a pricking using that drawing as my basis,
nd made a lace piece (kinda-sorta Milanese) on the pricking. Since the
ricking is mine, not Lenka's, I don't think there could be any copyright
bjection to my sharing it with everyone who'd like to use it.

Re: [lace] anniversary logo

2013-03-22 Thread Tamara P Duvall
Scans of the lace and the pricking have gone to Clay Blackwell (thanks, Clay!
And thanks, Bev, for offering, but Clay offered first g), who said she'd
upload them to Flickr, so everyone will be able to see them.

It was *definitely* Lenka's design. I have Jacqui's spider -- she made me a
brooch with it. I still wear it sometimes, though it gets tedious having to
explain to everyone no, I didn't make it; I can't make anything that fie. And
I printed off Carolina's at the time it was first posted, so I know which one
is whose.

Both Jacqui's design and Carolina's use the same concept: a lacy spider, with
an @ for its belly. Lenka's is the other way around: an @ sign, with a spider
in the center of the a. I can't remember whether hers had a web; mine does.
Hers might not have had it, because she was designing for wire, which would
have held the shape without any help. Mine's made in thread, and needed more
structure.
