So I fetched the current fpc from svn.
Trying to make same I get a similar error:

Seemingly "make bigide" on a 64 Bit Mint does not work this simply with
the 32 bit fpc:

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.8/crtbegin.o when searching for
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.8/crtbegin.o
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find
