Howdy. I just bid farewell at linuxrouter.org. However, in doing so, I'm facing a difficult issue as an occasional package developer. The following are a couple of random thoughts... Ok, I confess I haven't developed nearly as much as others, mostly trying to update 2.9.8 to a functional & non-cracked status. I stayed with the main 2.9.8 distribution as: 1) It provided a degree of stability in that it didn't change constantly and I knew how to patch it to meet my particular interests. 2) I was familiar with Dave C and Koon Wong's scripting style and could modify them easily. 3) When I update packages and write scripts, I don't want to have to publish different versions for each distribution. So I probably will have to pick a new one, and hope the main developer doesn't vanish. 4) I am concerned about splintering. Obviously different applications require different tools. However, it would behoove us to try and keep our main distribution(s) as "stripped" as possible, and keep application specific tools in packages. As a user, I really don't like to have to download a whole new "system" when I want to try a new tool. But as a developer, I know that there are not enough packages out there (at least compared to Koon Wong's site). Hm, perhaps more profoundly, what would be helpful in the package distribution arena would be not only a "generic.lrp" but also a "generic.lrpsrc, so that when you publish a package you supply the source allowing others to port it to their own distributions. This would also encourage package developers to make their packages as self contained as possible. Thank you for listening to my ramblings. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming. - Jon French _______________________________________________ Leaf-devel mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/leaf-devel
