I'm also one of the developers of the rt2x00 project. My main interest in it
was to support this driver for the Bering-uClibc project.

Fortunately this new driver is being scheduled to enter mainstream kernel.
But only for 2.6 series, 2.4 is no longer supported.

This leaves us with the shitty legacy code, which does not work properly for
most cases. No proper WPA among other things.

AP master mode is also not available in any of the codebases i know.

Therefore, and spite my envolvment with the rt2x00 project, I cannot
honestly endorse it for use in Bering-uClibc. If you need proper AP suport
in your router, go for a Atheros based PCI card, using the madwifi drivers.
They do use a proprietary HAL driver and thus taint the kernel, but it's
currently the best option for us. WPA works using hostapd.
