"The Leeds are going up the Wednesday going down, going up, going down, going up going down" was the song that reverberated around the ground for the last 10mins as we started to celebrate what was looking at that stage as the inevitable victory. The Leeds fans had been in good voice all night with the old 'leeds united calypso ' getting a few airings alongside the new(ish) Firpo song - though not sure what Junior , or anyone else , makes of the " you've seen Firpo , now f off home' chant. To be fair to Junior he had a decent game and his cross for the first goal was excellent. After the grinds against Huddersfield and Stoke , we expected the same and it was, like Stoke, a game where the result was all important, get the 3points, get through the game and get a few days well earned rest. The first half was fairly even and not much happened, we struggled to find our men and lost possession a lot as they chased and harried us. They seemed to carry little threat, but we had some panicky moments from corners . Both teams had one chance of note going into time added on. They missed a gilt edged chance inside our box , he should have scored but Mes saved well. At the other end Georginio got on the end of a long punt but could not get his chip over the keeper right ( a difficult chance) . We all thought it would be 0 0 , but cue Firpo with another assist and Bamford with a good close range finish- his 7th goal in 10 games since his return ( or so i was told). Bamford had and has many critics but on this form he is integral to us , long may he stay fit. Second half, coming into it with a lead, gave the match a different complexion, as we relaxed a bit and took pretty much total control. It was no surprise when we got the second. Another long kick , flicked on by Bamford to Georginio and his little knock on to Gnonto was sublime, exactly the right pace and right place for Willie to run onto it and smash it home. The crowd went wild. Not sure why we persist singing the Gnonto chant with the last line that he finds offensive but the " he eats spaghetti ' song drowned out any Wednesday drumming nonsense. We should really have put it to bed soon after when a lovely move ended with Gnonto putting a great ball into Summerville but he hit the keeper when he should have scored. Jimmy is one who more than most looks like he needs a rest. 2-0 meant there were a few nerves as the clock ticked down, the worry that if they got one back........... but once Ampadu cleared off the line after Mes spilled a long range shot, we just knew they were not getting anything , and their fans started to drift away as lots of subs were used- Connor Roberts again making things happen as a sub , having a shot beat the keeper but just past the post. We celebrated and laughed at Wednesday, their fans waving yellow notices asking their owner to leave as some protest. After the final whistle Georginio brought Paddy to do the oooooh hey hey hey thing followed by Farke doing the same, loving it all and having his name chanted loud and proud. Only my second away trip of the season, just reminded me how much fun an away day, especially an away victory is, but tickets are hard to get. So the players have 8 days now to rest and recharge having done their job, and the teams around us have just that bit more pressure on them . So a long way to go but 7pts from 3 games in 7 days inc 2 away ' derbies ' is a good return Roll on Millwall but in the meantime " the Leeds are going up, the Wednesday going down" Dave _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: https://mailman.gn.apc.org/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org
