He's also very talented, and very young - so he can be forgiven for not

2014-06-30 Thread Brendan McWilliams
If you were English then of course the Scotland match would have been
enjoyable, not to mention the whalloping the Dutch got and the 4-1.

Otherwise my memories of that tournament were low scoring in general and the
knockout stages being absolutely dire.

What a great game, it had everything. I'm knackered just watching it!

This tournament is probably best I've ever seen (at least since Euro 96) -
no negative play, only attacking fast footy. I'm loving it!

I think I've finally grown up - I'm not bothered who wins (I don't hate
 anyone anymore)...
Brazil: the support is fantastic plus they sound like a pub side - Joe,
 Bernard, William, Fred and Hulk!
Argies: I just love watching Messi.
Germany: I love their football model so want them to prosper.
(They're the teams we're supposed to dislike)
As for the rest - some great attacking teams. Holland are my tip - after
 they tore Spain apart.

As a nation, we're miles off. I agree with someone else's point - as long
as Sky pump millions into the Premier League we won't see young English
players coming thru as foreign players will come for the money.

I guess I'll come down to reality with a bump come early August when I
travel to Millwall or see our first home game! Here's hoping I'm wrong and
Hockawho is the amswer. I'm the eternal optimist where Leeds is concerned
 but I'm fearing the worst.

Anyway, roll on Colombia v Suarez-less Uruguay. 3-1 ti Colombia.

Euro 96??? That tournament on the whole was an abomination - dire football
throughout unless you were an English fan for 1 game (Holland).

Germany the best team so far.

Re: [LU] World Cup positive

2014-06-27 Thread John Lee
Interesting parallel David, as Cara has kind of got into the World Cup after
showing zero interest in football ever. Will have to co-ordinate going to
Elland Rd again - all 4 of us will go - I keep telling Trace that if I have to
suffer, we all do :-)

Well after some initial reticence I'm thoroughly enjoying the World Cup and
would agree with all the positive comments on here about it.  My favourite team
so far have been Chile - hard working, fabulous team ethic, skilled

but Argentina or Brazil.

And one positive from the tournament is that watching it has rekindled my
youngest son's interest in football.  His interest in attending ER with me had
all but disappeared over the last couple of seasons (not a surprise I suppose),
but thanks to the World Cup that interest has now been rekindled, and we plan
to go together next season. Yes I know the football at ER will be like watching
Iran's C team, but hey, it's a positive outcome, and who knows how many more
young supporters are brought into or back to the game after watch the World Cup?

Re: [LU] World Cup - anyone interested?

2014-06-13 Thread John Lee
Got some sympathy with you there DRB. I onlty watched Brazil after the Leeds
Rhinos game, and what I saw of the refereeing made me wonder what's the point.
Talk about home-team decisions - the penalty was ridiculous, as were many other
calls I saw. Put together with the fact that quality diving is clearly going to
pay, then we're going to see plenty of red cards and stupid decisions. Jordan
Henderson/Raheem Sterling - sort your tackling out

Re: [LU] World Cup - anyone interested?

2014-06-13 Thread David Brennan
I thought the refereeing so blatantly one sided, and the Croatian keeper's
efforts so half hearted, I wondered if they both secured their pensions last
night, via a nice payment from some dodgy gambling syndicate!

Matt Smith must be hoping that that Japanese ref officiates at all his games,
cause he'd never get sent off for elbowing an opponent ever again, whether
deliberate or not.

Where's Pierre Luigi Collina when you need him?

Got some sympathy with you there DRB. I onlty watched Brazil after the Leeds
Rhinos game, and what I saw of the refereeing made me wonder what's the point.
Talk about home-team decisions - the penalty was ridiculous, as were many other
calls I saw. Put together with the fact that quality diving is clearly going to
pay, then we're going to see plenty of red cards and stupid decisions. Jordan
Henderson/Raheem Sterling - sort your tackling out

Bah-World-Cup-Humbug!

No, you're right Ian, I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I watch it - and at least the
quality of football might be a bit better than we're used to watching at ER.

I've just participated in the sweep at work, and got Cameroon and Portugal.
Come on Cameroon (can't support Portugal with that shitbag in it, not even if
the sweep kitty was 4000 quid, not 40!).

Now it is the complete opposite.
They hector and bully the people they interview and you are only used on a
programme if you 'contribute' to the guiding directors opinion. If not you are
edited out.
They are out to make points. But it's their points. Part of the 'group think'.
Single handed the BBC has cheapened journalism. There is no longer freedom of
expression.
There is a monopoly on opinions. And the BBC was in the vanguard.
To add insult to injury they vilify those who don't share their opinion and
glorify their own and their actions.
As an ex pat I am deeply ashamed of this transformation from something that
was something to be proud of.

That's why it's the most trusted news organisation in the world. I'm not
saying they're perfect but they do strive for fair and balanced reporting,
including when they're pitching themselves against their own government.

Why should they not show it? Give me a reason.

Anyway, just watching the highlights of the cricket - love how haddin and
ponting have got their knickers in a twist. They don't like it up em mum!

 BBC and free press?
 You have to be joking.
They are an agenda ridden bunch of hypocrites.
They fit the news to their agenda.
Before you all get your knickers in a twist I am quoting a BBC reporter that
 interviewed me.
The UK was sold out. If the angle had shown PC causes in a wrong light it
 would have been buried.
 Trust me.

I'm with Sean. We have a free press. What the anti BBC people are saying is
we should 'get on board' with corruption and just tow the line. That's not
what our democracy is about. If we lost the world cup because we refused to
submit to a corrupt cabal then so be it. As mark says, let's form our own
world championship and see which one people want to see. Giving it to
Russia over us is an injustice. Giving it to fcking Qatar over, say,
America or Australia, is a joke.

Anyway, who cares? Leeds is all that *really* matters.

Why is he embarrassing the club?

He is absolutely right - there was no reason whatsoever the BBC had to
broadcast that episode of Panarama next week. It would have made no
difference to their free press rights, they are OUR corporation and
in this instance should have been responsible, and not just try and
create a fuss 2 days before the vote.

 Fucking stupid.
