Keynote Speakers: Chris Sidoti National spokesperson for the Human Rights Council of Australia on 'Australia's response to Asylum Seekers 2002-2' Peter Mares Author of the multi-award winning Borderline: Australia's Treatment of Refugees and Asylum Seekers, on 'The Future of Refugee Policy in Australia' Symposium themes will include: - Exclusion and citizenship in refugee policy - Refugees and multiculturalism - Temporary citizenship - Human, Cultural and Social rights of refugees - The future of refugee policy in Australia This half-day public symposium will draw together a range of community organisations, researchers and academics to discuss key issues of refugee and asylum seeker policy, multiculturalism, cultural identity and citizenship in a new and challenging national political climate. The symposium is one element of the international conference on "Cultural Citizenship: The Challenges of Globalisation", to be held on campus from 5-8 December. Planned events include a keynote panel discussion involving Chris Sidoti, Peter Mares and others; paper presentations; and a special session on the impact of the Temporary Protection Visa, involving representatives from community sector organisations and TPV holders.
