Tim Collins, one of the people accused of helping refugees escape from
Woomera, is now out on bail.

This week's stories: US Liberates More Iraqis...To the Joy of the
Australian People...All The News That Fits Editor Blows Own
Trumpet...Quotes of the Week.

US troops killed seven Iraqi women and children at a checkpoint when
their van would not stop as ordered, a US military official said.

(Australian Associated Press, April 1).

Claims that a majority of people now support the government's decision
to go to war without UN backing are wrong, according to a Sydney Morning
Herald survey. The survey found that, while support for the war had
risen, more people oppose the war than support it.

(Australian Associated Press, April 1).

The Community and Public Sector Union has agreed to only buy tshirts
from suppliers who are accredited as not using sweatshop labour.
Previously the CPSU bought tshirts from China and Australia, any of
which could have been made in sweatshop conditions. This follows a
campaign initiated by me.

Quotes of the week:

The Iraqis are sick people and we are the chemotherapy...I am starting
to hate this country. Wait till I get hold of a friggin' Iraqi. No, I
won't get hold of one. I'll just kill him.

US Corporal Ryan Dupre. Reported in Frontlines (US), March 31.

Chemical warfare suits had to be worn because of the threat from the
depleted uranium used in the American weapons

The Guardian (UK). The media and US government generally insist that
depleted uranium is not a health hazard.
The United Nations has passed two resolutions which include depleted
uranium weapons among weapons of mass or indiscriminate destruction.
Professor Doug Rokke, a former US Army physicist, sees it as a form of
nuclear weapon that contaminates everything and everyone.

I've invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us. They
are here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like
nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time when we
have fictitious election results that elect a fictitious president. We
live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious
reasons, whether it is the fiction of duct tape or the fiction of orange
alerts. We are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush. Shame
on you.

Mike Moore, accepting the Oscar for his documentry Bowling for Columbine.
Most newspapers reported that Moore received cheers and boos in equal
numbers. Moore says that in fact he got a standing ovation, but five
stagehands who were near the microphones all booed loudly, making it
appear to the TV audience that the reaction was mixed.

I'm fed up with this war in Iraq!!! I wanna go back home!!! I don't
wanna stay here no more!!! I don't wanna die in this war!!! PLZ make
that motherfu--er called Bush to set us free!!! We don't need this
war!!! If I keep stayin' here in Iraq I'm sure very soon I'll be dead! I
don't wanna die!! I wanna live!!! I'm so young yet! FU-- BUSH!!! Please
do something to help me and my friends here in Iraq. We wanna come back
home! Bush is a big bastar-, he drinks our blood.

Anonymous US soldier, in an email.

The mother held one child after another. Her eight-year-old daughter
had been killed. A small girl, half naked, was cradled in one of the
woman's arms, emitting tearing screams whenever she was moved -- into
the X-ray room, out again, into the treatment room. Her face was ripped
by shrapnel. Another child was in a bed. The doctor lifted the blankets
to reveal a bloody mess of open leg. She howled and screamed as they
tried to clean it, called out to Allah while her mother and aunt held
her. Her head was heavily bandaged and one eye closed and swollen. 'The
skull is also open,' the doctor said.

April 1, 2003

'We are peaceful, the WAR is violent!'

You call us violent demonstrators but we are for peace.
We want the bloody, unjust and illegal war in Iraq to stop.
We want the bombing to stop.
We want the troops to be brought home now.

You call OUR protests violent.
But YOU called out hundreds of armed police against high school
students.
Instructed them to use force instead of reason to resolve conflict.
But you cannot bully us, Mr Premier.

We will show you peaceful protest.
We will show you the OPPOSITE to what we see on the news every
hour, every day.
The celebration of MURDER by the armies of the rich and powerful.
By the armies of President Big Oil.

We young people have minds of our own.
We don't follow orders blindly.
We are not like the soldiers who were ordered to 'kill those that need
killing.
We are a coalition of the unwilling.

We are not like the Premier's Office.
We are not like the union bureaucracy.
We don't jump when you say jump.
We won't shut up when you say shut up.

People are being massacred and we won't just watch it on TV.
We are taking to the streets.
We will be peaceful, you watch us Mr Carr.
But the world will be watching too
how well you keep your police under control.
April 2, Sydney Town Hall.

We are peaceful protesters.
It is the WAR that is violent.

LL:DDS: 36th Justice and Peace Candle Light Walk

2003-03-31 Thread Roma Mitchell Community Legal Centre Inc.
Subject: 36th Candle Light Walk - Treaty-Bill Of Rights - NO SA NUCLEAR
DUMP - Friday 4/4/03 - 6.45PM - Around Government House, North Tce,
Adelaide20

THE CANDLE LIGHT WALK HAS AN ON-LINE FLYER AT:
http://www.country-liberal-party.com/pages/adelaidemob.htm

Just a reminder that the 36th Candle Light Walk for Justice Peace is
on Friday 4 April, 2003, in Adelaide - starting at ex-daylight saving
time: walkers gather from 6.45pm for a 7.15pm start. Feel free to use
the item in italics below as a template for your publicity for the
Justice Peace Candle Light Walk in support of a Treaty Bill of
Rights.

JUSTICE PEACE CANDLIGHT WALK: Australians can show their support for
a treaty with Australia's Indigenous peoples. Candles will be lit for
justice and peace advocating an Indigenous treaty on Friday 4 April,
2003, and every following first Friday of the month throughout 2003.
Walkers can gather with candles at Government House from 6.45.PM for a
7.15PM start. The walk aims to protect Ngarrindjeri culture, spiritual
beliefs, lands and waters, to stop any nuclear waste dump on traditional
lands, and from affecting the environment via a Treaty Bill of
Rights.

Candle Light Walks are held in Adelaide at Genocide Corner in front of
Government House on the first Friday of the month. These walks express
the concern of those who wish justice for Indigenous peoples. There's an
opportunity to listen to Ngarrindjeri, and other Indigenous Elders speak
on issues affecting their people.

The microphone remains open for anyone to offer their thoughts on
current issues, to sing a song, or to share stories of struggle. Please
feel free to attend, and show support for a Treaty with Indigenous
people, a Bill of Rights, justice and peace, as well as opposition to
any nuclear dump in South Australia.

Another monthly Candle Light Walk is to begin in Sydney, and soon Candle
Light Walks in other States may follow. Don't worry if it will just be a
small group of you to start with as Vincent Lingiari said: from
little things big things grow ! Respect Indigenous people's traditional
land and waters. Light a candle and walk for justice and peace. Join the
Indigenous call for a TREATY.

Respect Indigenous rights. Recognise Ngarrindjeri culture and spiritual
beliefs. Look after the Coorong and its wildlife. Protect this unique
Australian wetland. Look after Lake Eyre. Conserve this unique cultural
environment. Protect its cattle and tourist industries.

NO SOUTH AUSTRALIAN NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP20

Keep walking.
